very big money shortage so unless I get a job soon I will have to borrow for new not remaned complete gm heads. $650 for a pair from gm performance, jegs or summit. That $300 dollar GM Performance vortectec head they have in catalogs is the direct oem replacement for the vortec GEN-I small blocks. just no trocker arms or nuts. New casting and valve parts though. Remaned heads go for about $340 each at local stores so new GM's it is. You would think it would be the other way around. A NEW stock non-remaned long block with tins is $2200 at my local dealers as well. They are two miles away and have seven block units on hand in the back room. No core charges so I can add to my paper weight collection.

This truck is getting expensive and I have not even put 800 miles on it yet. Got it in September.

8 months? Wow that really sucks. To be honest these trucks are real pieces of shit. Years ago I leased a preowned 1998 Navigator with 80K, my family bought my 2000 Escalade with 20 somthing thousand miles. Long story short my naviagator handled, stopped and rode ten times better. Nevermind it never gave me any problems and got about 8 mpg more. I cannot believe these trucks are as popular as they are.

The newer body style are trucks are nite and day compared to these OBS's and they were out when my father bought this truck but he was too cheap to spend the extra money! Since last summer I spent way over 6k on this thing. I didnt put 1 dollar in the bank!

Ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, shocks all around, battery, exhaust, fuel pump, complete a/c, radiator, brakes front and rear, tires, etc. Everything went bad at once. Really sucks!

Still have to buy a new drivers seat and center console to make it decent. All this cash I could have built a 383 stroker with a 100 shot of NOS and had money left over for a performance tranny!

Great design of having both center exhaust valves next to each other.

Had the same thing happen to my 98 Tahoe. Mine would leak coolant into the cylinder when the truck would sit for a while. Cost me $550 for 2 GMPP heads shipped to my house from Summit about 3 years ago.

All that being said I sure dont miss my 98!

costing me $650 for the same in a few weeks.

I feel for you. Mine caught me off guard also. And that was a few months after doing my intake gaskets and getting the mpfi conversion. Then the tranny rebuild a few months later.

Did I mention that I don't miss my OBS?

Mine could have been cracked a while ago giving the condition of the cooling system. I blew a gasket between cylinders on the first full throttle test of the K&N FIPK. What a blow after all the work I put in this thing. But hey new heads would do me nicely and looking forward to finishing it. Still have a front end/steering issue to deal with too. Then maybe I can actually drive a long trip somewhere.

Well I was supposed to get new heads Thursday but FedEx was to lazy to make an attempt to reach the apartment so I bitched and complained and will see what happens today. Pics of those and some used 1.6 comp rockers will be up soon I hope.

I would like to finish this weekend but unfortunately I am still short a smaller torque wrench for the intake manifold bolts. I got a cheap one from Jegs coming with the heads but they did not have a 1/4". And of course with no control of money coming in I am on a stand still with that part so it holds up. manifold tightening, coolant refill and burp, and start up. I also need to get my hands on an oil priming tool since I would like to see oil on the new heads before first start and the fact it has been sitting a month. Don't want to be turning crank any more form valve settings or clearance checks until I pump some oil into the bearings. That way any debris from job will get filtered by cycling the oil supply a while and when finally run for a few days or weeks change over the oil and filter.

Its running leaner due to the CAI, the computer needs to relean the fuel trims. Unless you have a scanner to reset them you can unhook your battery for 30 min to clear the memory, then drive it again. it will learn the trims easier that way.

Well I still have not got heads on as I have been recovering from a illness but I think I was able to get MSD wires, cap/rotor, 6al digital box and harness in the meantime. Will try to start work again Sunday.

Dang! You are going to have a nice machine when you are done! :D

I'm really interested in those 1.6 rocker arms...Mine are still sitting in it's box....If yours fit ok, and you have no problems, then I might get the courage to try mine... :Handshake:

Your going to really like the all MSD IGN. That really woke my truck up. I figure that I don't have to guess what plugs your going to run eh? :)

Get well, feel better and get r dun!

Autolite 605's of course. As a matter of fact when we each reach 10k miles lets do a plug by plug comparisons for everyone here. The more tech data here the better. could even sticky it. Will update when I check the rocker clearance issue but other user I got them from reported no issues and no push rod mods.
