Yeah, Oliver is correct. The 285 refers to the width of the tire.

I'm running 305/50/20's with my keys cranked and haven't rubbed yet....but I haven't exactly been abusing the truck, either. The actual diameter of the tire will be determined by the other numbers on it, and without knowing your wheel diameter we can't tell you too much more. Check out this site for a good tire-size calculator:

Damn. I need to pay more attention before posting. I read the first page and thought that was it. I completely missed the other two pages.

Done-ish..

Just as a finish note..
Got mine back to today from my local shop.

Where I started:
Had a popping noise in the front left.
started off with what I thought was bad upper ball joint, replaced upper control arms because the rubber grease grommet had failed (thought that was it). While I had it apart replaced shocks with Bil's 5100's took it to the shop to have it aligned and tighten the bars to alleviate the small amount of rubbing from the new 285 Michelin AT 2's

Where I ended up:
instead I need lower control arms and an Idler arm FML...
Good news is I don't have to worry about upper control arms and shocks for a while!

However, It rides better than new and looks awesome. Not a dramatic difference just slightly beefier.

What about cranking them on a 2wd? Does it still stress the suspension? Or is it the CV axles on a 4wd that are the main thing stressed when cranked? I am looking for about 2 inches possibly 3 inches of lift, can that be obtained by cranking and no worries about damaging the suspension because its cranked?

i would just crank them not having cv axles to worry about you will be fine mine is 4wd with ford keys up, front cranked to level with rancho lift shocks with 160k have had no problems use 4wd all winter and rides great
