... the PICO test is a GM scam
At GM's scale, it is likely cheaper for GM to do a PICO test, vs just draining the oil and sticking a flexyscope / endoscope (?) into the oilpan to check for swarf -
plus they avoid visually confirming any existence of incriminating evidence - failure to clean & inspect engine parts prior to assembly.
That's what you get when you ask one of the guilty parties to investigate its role in its guilt -
obviously there are other guilty parties, but the point is GM is intentionally NOT checking for swarf.

Just stick a scope in the open oilpan. If you see ANY swarf, the PICO test becomes irrelevant.

The PICO test is probably a great analysis tool for determining IN REAL TIME if there are any harmonics that shouldn't be occurring in the engine.
In other words, for determining if the engine has pumped enough swarf through itself, and is in the middle of the process of failing.
If the engine is not yet suffering from 'stage 6 cancer' (NOT A TYPO), GM's HOPE is that the engine MIGHT make it past the warranty.
Unlikely as that is, I get why GM would want to take that bet; citing a PICO test 'pass' lets them off the hook for the time being.

GM wants to get away with replacing as few engines as possible - if looking inside the oilpan found any swarf,
passing the PICO test just proves the engine isn't in the process of offing itself YET.
But as far as (the PICO test) being a PREDICTIVE tool? Seems absolutely worthless.
Seems? SEEMS?
Actually, let me rephrase that: it's worth it for GM to check if the engine is in the middle of dying.
It's NOT worth it for GM to check for any direct evidence of birth defects.

What crosses my eyes along 2 different axes is that the sale of mechanic's endoscopes has not risen 1000x, especially among non-dealer & shadetree mechanics.

It will be interesting to see 5 years from now if there are any more failures occurring. My guess is that the vast majority of failure will have happened by then.

I'm afraid they will all fail in 5 years.

Seems like it, or at least is an imperfect analysis tool
I talked about this right away, and when the 25 motors went, that nothing had changed .... so I decided not to take risks and not to take the 26 model ....and switched to the Jeep brand)

I have this at work on many different systems. It isn't called PICO but is the same thing.

The huge difference is that it runs 24 hours per day, stores the data, and historizes it. I have alarm bands and shutdown bands set up that the system will trigger if readings get concerning. It is a continuous monitoring system.

The other difference is the probes that are generating the signals are installed into the machine and looking right at the rotor shaft.

The goal of this system is to mitigate machine damage in a failure, not stop it altogether.

Checking this on a potential bearing failure only screens the units with either an active or incipient failure. It is just a spot check of sorts.

The sheer number of instances of people passing the pico test and failing shortly after is telling me, at least, that the issue is not one that involves degredation over time of the bearings. The failure scenario seems to be almost sudden.

I have heard from fairly reliable sources that GM and other manufacturers are now adding full time PICO type testing into the ECU programming using the existing knock sensors to potentially trigger a SES/CEL/MIL if noise or vibration that could possibly be an indicator of an engine on the way to failing rather than expected, knock from heavy tip in throttle or WOT.

I also believe that during some service visits to the dealer manufacturers may be reflashing ECU's on vehicles that are already out in the wild, but that would only be done while the vehicle is for service because it's not an OTA type of update. That being said, so many people ignore the SES/CEL/MIL so this type of alert of just the light coming on to hope the driver pulls over and get things investigated further.

As the world burns!

So this is like, the plastic pin in the turkey? When it pops, your turkey's done?
When your engine throws this code, your engine's done?

Again, note how hard carmakers work to avoid peeking inside the pan.

Pretty much a Go/No Go real time test, BUT if the driver ignores the light, they may get stuck.

No need to look inside the oil pan, just get a decent magnetic drain plug and check the oil every fill up and look for signs of metal on the drain plug and black on the towel when wiping the dipstick. At least we're lucky for the moment. We still have a dipstick so many vehicles these days don't have anything other than an oil level monitor.

Jeep? Going from engine problems to differential problems? LOL Sorry, man. I hope you'll reconsider and will stick around here.

I bought a grand wagoner with a 3.0t engine, after 6.2 GM, it's already hard to scare me. And Grand Wagonier is just a space car, I like it very much)

What?!?!

I thought you just installed a refreshed properly disassembled and reassembled L87 6.2 motor in your 2022 Yukon XL Denali?
Did you trade it in on the Wagoneer?

I would have bought your Bi-LED module retrofit headlights.

3.6l pentastar? Yikes! I have one of those and waiting for the failure. The 3.0l is not much better.
