I have a 2025 Z71 Tahoe with 5000 miles. I'm anxious to change the oil and first maintenance, but the app suggest I should wait until 7500 miles. What are your thoughts on first oil change. It's included in the original purchase so no cost.

Do yourself a favor and DON'T ever go by the oil life monitor........or the app. 7500 intervals will have you back in the dealership for all the WRONG reasons.

Also, consider switching to 5w-30 and keep it to 5k intervals. It won't hurt a thing, or tank your MPG.

I tried to go early to get my first free oil change but dealer stated that GM wont do it free unless your 30% or less on the OLMS.

The first oil change of any new vehicle should always be early but they wouldn't budge so as soon as it got to 31% I booked appointment

On a new vehicle, I would do an initial oil change around 2500-3000 miles, then every 5000 miles after regardless of OLM %.

I would definitely change the oil after the break-in period, which is about 1,000 miles, and then again after 2,000 miles. There are suspicions that engine wear products, which aren't removed by oil changes in the first 1,2,000 miles, are what really kill an engine.

Get to your dealer NOW! I changed mine at 2500 miles and no problem at dealer. Then every 5000 miles after the first one. I have used the same dealer and service person for a very long time and he always has recommended every 5k for oil changes.

Our OLM always says change engine oil at or around 3800-4000 miles on both the Tahoe and Silverado, the app gets it's info from the vehicle so there both going to be the same. Every Chevrolet vehicle I have owned since they put the OLM in there vehicles have always been in the ballpark of those miles.

I do not believe that GM uses any special break-in oil in their new motors, so, it should not matter if you change it 'early'.

As repeatedly stated above, frequent oil changes will significantly lengthen the life of your motor. Remember that while synthetic oil does not break down like conventional oil, there are still carbon-based contaminants floating around in your oil from the combustion process, and your oil filter will capture these contaminants only down to a certain particle size. The smaller particles continue to float around in your oil, sporadically scraping against your various bearing surfaces.

The general rule of thought on this Forum is that you change your oil and filter every 5000 miles or less, and you use a top tier motor oil and a top quality oil filter.

What should be included in the first free required oil change? Do they do a full service and tire rotation or are those billable items. I'm scheduled tomorrow.

Below is my yukon’s first change at 500 miles… look at it closely by zooming in… you will see a lot of debris.. change the oil until you have eliminated this field of trash coming out of the motor… every 500 miles till it is clean…

I expect tooling on the V8s has had it.. and gm is not cleaning like they did on my old ‘18 5.3… which clean as a whistle.

My ‘24 engine.. tooling not so good… cleaning not so good.. change the oil a lot if you want a motor that lasts.

Also install a catch can.

Also install a carbyte.

Also the guy suggest a little heavier oil are probably right.

1000 then 5000. Makes it easy to remember. 5,10,15,20,25 etc. Sadly, I don't use the free one that comes with it. It's too much of a hassle to make an appointment. You wait on it, and it ends up being 2+ hours and an oil change is pretty simple. I might do it if I had a laundry list of warranty items, I wanted them to fix. But to take it in for that alone? Nah, not really. I don't care about the rotation; I want to get rid of these Alenza's ASAP anyways.... I put a Fumoto valve on mine at 1000 miles. I can do the whole job in 20 minutes if necessary once it's on the ramps.

I just have them change oil and filter the less they do the least other problems I have i have found. Scratched wheels damaged lug nuts etc,

I don't know what color your vehicle is, but I don't let them wash vehicle.

I did a 500 mile break in change when I bought my truck in 2011 and have done 10k mile changes since, now at 233k miles. At most, I add 0.5 qts between changes and it's usually closer to the end of the interval and when I've driven on long road trips (1000 mile roundtrip.) I'm a big advocate of an early change to remove any break in metal. It's money well spent if you have to pay for it or diy vs. the maintenance plan covering.

I'm also a fan of doing oil analysis to find an interval that works for you based on driving and usage habits. There's no one size fits all.

With the full synthetic oil, there is no reason to change early except for the first change, which I did at 5K on my Silverados and Tahoe. (unless you operate in extreme conditions) Most of my oil changes are around 7-7.5K.
Way back in the day, we experimented with Mobil 1 on my tractor with a 475 Cat. Every 10K, we'd change filters and pull a sample. It was almost 125K till the sample called for an oil change.

The first oil change of new engine has always been a topic of debate.

There are two basic arguments, one side says it's needed to flush out debris left from manufacturing & initial break-in wear particles, the other side says that GM does that for you, and it's not needed.

I looked at it as risk vs. reward vs. cost. The cost of an early oil change is small compared to the cost of the vehicle (I do my own maintenance, so an oil change is less than $100). And the potential negative effects of changing the oil early are pretty much zero.

I figured I've wasted $100 on way stupider stuff and changed the oil in my new Tahoe at 500 miles.

Did it help,,,maybe and I'll never know if it did or didn't,,, did it hurt anything,,, nope sure didn't,,, what did it cost,,,less that $100 and about 30 minutes of my time.

I also cut open every used oil filter (using a special tool meant specifically for cutting open oil filters, which basically acts like a big tubing cutter). It's a leftover habit from my drag racing days. My non-scientific/subjective observations of the oil filter media says there are a lot fewer wear particles in the second and later filters compared to the first filter, but that doesn't necessarily mean the first filter couldn't have gone longer.

I've sent in a few oil samples to Blackstone (started after the third oil change), and so far, the lab says everything looks good with the 6.2's guts. But if anyone has a suggestion for a different oil analysis lab, I would appreciate it. Blackstone takes forever, and I question the validity of the fuel dilution numbers they give for some of my other vehicles ( mostly my diesel trucks, not so much the gas Tahoe).

I had the oil changed to Mobil 1 at 25 miles. The truck hadn’t yet left the dealership. I’ve done that to every truck I’ve acquired since 1995.

This is kinda what I did with my Tahoe.
First oil change was at 1000 miles and then I had it changed at 3000.

I do every 4-5000 now depending on how much I tow and stop/start driving.
I don’t mind paying for oil change. Even if it is over kill I feel much better driving after these oil changes.

There are plenty who go with the long interval change at 7500 miles and have no issues but I would rather be safe and pay for the peace of mind.
