I've wrenched on my own cars for years now. The Yukon is due for plugs and wires. Any common pitfalls to avoid? Any tricks to make the job simpler? Considering the dealership wants $600 for the job, I imagine it must be a PITA.

The $600 job is at what labor rate per hour? I would guess at least $180 an hour, depending on what part of the country you are in. Lets say 2 hours labor is $360 leaving $240 for parts. Likely $15 each for plugs and that is $120 and that leaves $120 for plug wires. That all adds up to $600.

Attention to detail is all that is needed and quality parts. Plugs- https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=13869485&cc=3438504&pt=7212&jsn=593=$6.52 each at RA=$52.16....Wires- https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=13938077&cc=3438504&pt=7224&jsn=603=$53.89 at RA.

$52.16
$53.89
______
$106.05 plus shipping.

You can look at you tube for labor videos. Hardest plug would be the #8 plug at back on p/s.

The links didn't work until I added a space before the "http..." for both. You may want to test your links after you post them to verify that they work, otherwise they may not be useful.

Amusingly enough, I ordered those exact plugs and wires yesterday. I'm not really mad at the garage for the price they quoted, I'm just too cheap to pay that kind of money for a simple job. Their time has value and I understand the job, while simple, does take time.

Now, if they were cracking the engine open for a cam or something then I would pay them their money. I've looked at the replacement cost for that engine and do not want to buy one if I mess something up!

For the #8 plug, @Rocket Man shows what to use:

Thanks for the tip. I had a 02 Z28 years ago. On that one it was easiest to change the plugs when installing long tube headers. Already had the motor mounts undone, power steering pump loose, and motor jacked up until the trans hit the tunnel. Hopefully her truck goes easier than that Camaro.

Cylinders 1-7 should take ~ an hour. Dam cylinder 8 takes another hour itself haha. Theres a couple good videos on youtube showing tricks and some cool tools that would help if you are like me and always looking for an excuse to buy a new tool, but you can do it with most regular tools if you wrench.

I've always thought that "You know, that might be handy someday" was a plenty good excuse for new tools and gadgets.

Very true. I have a bunch of random car and Harley specialty tools that Ive acquired over the years, either at trade shows or just reading random forums with people having to get a special tool to fix a problem I never had. But if I ever do Im ready! lol

Cylinder #8 should take no more than 10 min. See the tools to use in Post #5 above. Easy peasy.

I just got done changing the plugs and wires. Wasn't the worst set of plugs I've changed, but close. Driver's side I did from the top, no problem. I pulled the passenger tire and wheel liner to access from the side. Wasn't that bad, except for cylinder 8. My truck has the rear heat and a/c, so the heater lines for the rear unit run RIGHT in front of cylinder #8. It took me the longest just to pull the plug wire off of #8.
