The dealership talked me into the oil additive in my 2023 Tahoe 6.2 engine and said to use every third oil change. Good idea or not???? This was my third change so I did. Should I continue???

Here’s a pro tip if you can’t decide. If it’s not in the owners manual, and the dealer profits from the upsell it’s probably not necessary. If it really did anything they would provide a warranty or back it up somehow.

The dealership talked me into the oil additive ...
If you have no clue which specific oil additive -
THE oil additive? REALLY? -
then there's no way to know if the additive is helpful, harmless, useless, or bad for your engine.

To skip over a bunch of schidt, if you change your oil when the Oil Life Monitor says 25% instead of less,
and you change it with a high quality synthetic from Mobil1, Valvoline, Quaker State, or Pennzoil,
no motor oil additive should be necessary.

My Dealer did a "major" 20k service yesterday on our Denali. I asked for Mobil 1 and they also added the oil additive. I am seriously considering buying the extended warranty. It gets me 6 years or to 60k miles from when I buy it for $3,100.00. Right now I am at 3 years and 20k miles. To extend the warranty to the 5 year 60k powertrain coverage is $2,100.00.

If I could talk 'em down to $2,875 for the 6 yr 60k warranty I'd consider it,
'cause it's likely you'll spend $2,875 fixing its various sundry issues over the next 6 years.

Yea, I just got an email from GM offering several levels of an extended warranty. Prices are all higher that what the Dealer is offering from some in-state outfit. The GM 5 yr 60k is $5k.

Check Knapp or James Black Cadillac and see what their pricing would be.

I wouldn't do any oil additives. My dealership tried to push those on me and I discovered the owners of the dealership also had a financial stake in the oil additive company.

No additives are needed except in rare circumstances. Example - I had a 2010 Cadillac CTS V. At about 40,000 miles on start up it would send up a huge blue smoke cloud. Not a little smoke, but a fire extinguisher amount of smoke. It was absolutely embarrassing. This is a performance car, not a 280,000 mile stovebolt 6. My theory was fuel injector problems. I had bought it with about 15,000 Boston miles on it, but one never knows what kind of gasoline it might have taken on at some point. I run Top Tier. After the 10th smoke-out episode or so, I bought eight bottles of techron and put one in at every fill-up. I also ran a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil until my next oil change.

I don't know which/both were successful, but I put 208,000 miles on it and it never happened again. This engine ran 170 mph at 193,000 miles. It never used the first quart between changes. I still think I had a fuel injector problem, but a blind squirrel.......

So that regimen 100% solved my problem.

Techron is generally considered the best gas additive in the business, hands down. Use it if when needed. Top Tier gas has a good additive package and should keep you clean.

Marvel Mystery Oil is just that. If it was the one that worked it will forever be a mystery to me. But it too has a good reputation for engine oil internals.

Otherwise, Top Tier Manufacturer Recommended Octane and regular oil changes. I use Amsoil 5/30 Signature Oil and Amsoil Oil filters in 100% of my cars, regardless of manufacturer recommendations.

Oh, and don't put one of those high performance rag air filters on. That is a great way to provide for enhanced air flow because it lets larger particles into the intake than a regular air filter. But the rag is very adept at introducing unnecessary wear into what otherwise is a long term daily driver. Save the high performance rag air filters for 1/4 mile trips only. That extra 5 hp might come in handy under those circumstances.

Experience on oil and filter recommendation: 2005 Cadillac CTS V 176,000 miles, 2010 Cadillac CTS V 208,000 miles. 1985 Suburban 281,000 miles. 2011 Yukon XL 203,000 miles, 1990 Taurus SHO 343,000 miles.

I also use highly rated air filters. Purolater or Wix. This link will give you more info. It may not sell you, but it did me.

..plus if the 6.2 detonates the dealers are required to send an oil sample back to GM for analysis. Is they find something in the oil that is not in the owner’s manual, they can deny a warranty replacement

Been there with my 6.2L. The dealer threw in an additive without explaining much—felt more like a sales tactic. But I started reading up on modern additives and landed on TriboTEX. After using it, my engine ran quieter and smoother, especially under load. Unlike the dealer’s stuff that needs constant reapplication, TriboTEX is more of a one-and-done solution for long-term protection.
