My tin-foil understanding is that they dump as much roadsalt and possible, and pre-treat with brine, in order to remove a consistent amount of vehicles from the roads as time moves on.
I think that's mostly a side effect of optimizing for other cost factors (e.g. salt is cheap and lawsuits for untreated roads that lead to an accident are expensive), but who knows. I know that I will never live in a rust belt state again, that's for sure. Virginia is borderline, but my wife and I don't have any commutes, so we can usually avoid the 3-4 days/year that we have salted roads.

Seriously though, a friend of mine moved from this area to the Salt Lake City vicinity last year. He’s had a rude awakening about road salt on his pickup. Constantly trying to keep it washed in freezing temps.

Ordered my new Weight Distribution hitch today. I opted to get it straight from the manufacturer in Utah ( these are made in the USA )
Amazon sells same repackaged and have bad reviews for delivering boxes that are all torn open and missing pieces.

Saved a few bucks and got it tailor fit for my rig, with a few freebie extras thrown in.

I researched all sway and weight distr hitches and this one came out on top. $900 change w/ tax delivered to me.

Traveling across the continent towing a 20 foot cargo trailer with peace of mind... priceless ;)

And Salt Lake City is a dry climate compared with the midwest and northeast. In Denver, a car body will reasonably last 20-25 years before needing any rust repair, depending on how much time it spends in the mountains. I sold my '02 Suburban in 2018 and had just repaired a small patch on the pax rear quarter panel when I sold it. It never rusted through - just surface rust from all of the rock dings over the years. It spent most of its life in Silverthorne in the mountains where the salt and snow are much more frequent than in Denver.

Hell yes. :) Actually it tests everything if you drive it hard enough.
mines definitely cop chase ready i can assure you of that, lol
I have a scanner on my desk with the sheriff dispatch on it 24/7, at least once a day they are chasing someone and often I hear, "there smoking" or "appears they are heaving transmission problems" etc, etc.
the only thing I don't have is run flats because they will spike you
the run flats cost twice as much
they have GPS taggers also, they shoot them and they are sticky enough to stay on the vehicle, then they fall back and wait until you stop somewhere thinking you got away
then they use a portable facial & fingerprint scanner to identify you in case you lie about your identity
helicopter, drones, dogs. kind of hard to get away anymore but people do it if they didn't get the perimeter setup in time.
they usually end in either a "914" (crash) or "foot bail" then the fun starts

It doesn't test anything, but driving it hard is fun!

I'm a moron, I was picturing percussive maintenance as a way to test for a leak. Like, does a leaky manifold sound differnt when you tap it with a hammer vs. a manifold tight to the block.

I'll just be over here looking for the ID-10T oil.

usually you can hear it on a cold start if it is leaking

Just wanted to say this thread is a godsend to get reminders of when you did repairs on your car. I forgot when I changed my plugs but seen it was in June 2020 around 210k miles. Currently Jan 2023 with 247k miles. I see a slight idle issue and I know its not plugs.
clean the intake and throw some injector cleaner in it for a few tank fulls, usually that will smooth the idle out, plugs should not go bad that fast unless they were fakes. I drive the pisss out of mine and the only change the plugs about every 60 or so and never have any misfire issues. I do clean the intake about every 3 months and randomly throw injector cleaner in it probably about the same every 3 months or so.
if that doesn't work have a injector service done, that usually runs under a $100, usually around $80 but inflation has hit so no telling anymore.

Two Three great things today. First, I fixed my "Battery Voltage Low - Start Vehicle" by just tightening the loose positive battery connection. Second, my insurance company was able to recover the $500 deductible from the uninsured motorist who rear ended me a few months ago and sent me a check today. First, I woke up on the green side. a check in the mail is always nice, I had a guy clearly run a red light on dash cam and they still initially said I was partly to blame but changed it later and sent me a check as well. completely mind boggling, but whatever

Managed to get it off somehow without breaking any plastic tabs which is unusual for me, appears the screen cover is plastic welded on and they just gave out, luckily the post's are large enough and already hollow inside so I just put some small screws and washers in it seems to be good enough saved $90 for a used seat back which would have been the next choice
