Hmm, yeah I need to look into that. I'm not above buying new door handles, if they'll be strong. Maybe I can do that AND reinforce that point with something prior to installation?

Sounds like a plan.
This is the handle that is held on with a few bolts.

You'll need to remove the entire panel to remove those bolts. 7mm iirc.
