Sometimes you just have to find “a guy” that will pass the vehicle. Which can be hard to find. Even my guy that works with me sometimes will peel the tint off my wife’s headlights every year.. rules are rules I suppose

Just pisses me off because you always see unsafe jalopy's running the streets you know damn we'll count pass inspection and we play by the rules and especially those of us who do our own work on our cars to ease the pain come inspection time and still get our balls busted.

The inspections are meant, according to the state, to keep safe rigs on the roads and unsafe rigs off the roads and to keep air clean. It is a way to line pockets of the state and also the shops and parts stores with lobbyists. The inspections do accomplish good things as well but the system is full of holes and can be worked by anyone with a law breaking mind.

I hated doing them because of that and only wanted to find and repair legitimate problems.

If she was driving an Iowa registered car in Pa without an inspection sticker, how would Pa know that it's supposed to have one? They haven't a clue. And even if they did know, I don't think they could even give her a ticket. That's like a Jersey cop giving a ticket to a Pa driver for only having 1 license plate.

Nope. No inspections in Iowa. They did away with them back in the mid-to-late 70’s.

Know a few folks that do that. My niece is driving a 2000 odyssey out in Colorado with Iowa plates for that reason. Would never pass Colorado’s inspection.

got to find those back street shops that never really have cars outside waiting to be worked on but seem to get alot of traffic. its also suprisingly easy to find people selling the inspection stickers here in pa. golden rule for most drivers in pa who aren't driving brand new cars is never go to the chain shops. they will get you every time. ive even had the firestone here in stroudsburg fail my car for numerous steering components. wanted more than the car was worth to fix it. when they pulled that they neglected to check the work history on the car. not even a week prior i replaced alot of front end parts and my alignment was WAAAYYY off and they were the only ones willing to get my car right in. they completed the alignment without any comments. so 5 days later when i brought it back for inspection and they gave me the report it was priceless. i asked the clerk if she could pull up my work history so she did. looked like she seen a ghost and she just turned and stared at me for a few seconds with fear on her face. blah blah back and forth and they insisted i would still be paying for the failed inspection or they wouldn't give my key back. i told them i wasn't paying they could keep the key i have a spare and id be calling corporate and reporting them. i left with some angry sign language got in my uninspected car and left never heard from them. i did follow through on the worthless threat i doubt anything came of it.

To be clear, all we have are emissions inspections along the Front Range. No "safety" inspections in Colorado.

Lots of people register their cars in counties that don't require emissions testiing. They would have to have a valid address in that county to use, maybe a second home or the home of a friend.

We have no inspections in Oregon but the county that Portland is in makes them do an emissions check.

Where I lived everyone was either from NY or NJ. I found a local mechanic who I thought was honest. Every time I went there was on my day off, so I was always in street clothes--WELL--One day I went there on my way to work--worked in NJ, so my round trip commute was 200 miles a day--to talk to the owner, who btw was from NY. He saw me in uniform and we started to bs, real friendly. He asked me, what I thought was jokingly--if my job paid well. It did. Wouldn't you know--we had a 92 Dodge Dynasty--very simple fwd basic 6 cyl car. It needed a starter. Mechanic tells me it's gonna cost me $700! There was no tow involved. Of course my gf at the time told me this as I was at work. I didn't pay. I must've looked like I was stupid lol. Never did pay. I think her ex husband paid something. Didn't know, didn't care. Now THAT was some scumbag $hit.

far as i know the only thing they can pull someone over in another state for is things that technically make the vehicle unsafe. that or just things that dont meet that states vehicle codes. if you come from a state that basically allows you to drive a monster truck on the roads into a state with stiffer lift laws you could get pulled over. basic things like lights not working will get you a ticket also.

I'm working on a 2009 PT Cruiser I bought from a woman who quit driving. All it really needed was a radiator and wheel bearings. I'm going through it mechanically to make sure any issues are addressed so I can drive it as a back up but I'll probably flip it as I've spent a lot more than I anticipated on it. I can't stand something that isn't right. I sold my Escalade to another member here and I was upset when he got home and the brake lights weren't working. It meant I was driving it without brake lights and sold it to someone else without them.

Indiana hasn't had vehicle inspections since 1978. I had a truck fail because of rusted body mounts on the cab. They pulled the sticker altogether. Had it been a minor problem, I would have had 14 days to fix it and had a red sticker to show that. Since it failed in a major way, the sticker was gone and I drove it for several months with no sticker. The windshield was really clean so I would have told them I just got new glass. Evidently I wasn't the only one as the law was repealed later.

Indiana uses just front plates. I sometimes go to Illinois and see photo enforced signs in work zones. I won't speed through those but I often think "Good luck with that".

The color of the sticker changed each year, as the only means of telling if it was current. The sticker was placed in the top center of the windshield, behind the rear view mirror.

My brother-in-law had an Econoline van, which was never worthy of a 'pass' inspection, so he improvised. He took a Post-It note of the right or similar color, laser printed a month number on it, and stuck it to his windshield in the correct location. He was successful for over 2 years, until the police came looking for him, as a result of multiple unpaid parking tickets. The police were quite impressed at his improvisation, as even they did not notice it right away, until they were loading his van on a flatbed, to tow it away to the impoundment location.

I've always had good luck with cheap honda/acura's. bought plenty of 200k miles examples and put additional 20k-40k without issues. none cost more than $1500. I remember once having an acura integra and I was working about 80 mile round trip from home and it was the dead of winter and the car used to get cold while I was driving and barely had heat that drove me nuts.

bad cars for me was probably an 2002 audi a4 1.8t. car drove awesome (I would be on the highway and look down and not even notice I'm doing 90) but got terrible mpg. I'm talking about 8-9mpg and I wasted a lot of money throwing parts at it with no fix. another was a 2004 z71, constant p1071 and p0174 was never able to fix it. was only getting 7 mpg ended up selling it after a few months.

in ny the inspection sticker is on the front windshield and they use a whole punch to punch out the month u got it so I used to ask for the piece that was punched out and I would tape that little piece back on and punch out December and get myself some extra time. did that for years until I got caught and got a ticket.
