I have googled and read the entire manual and cannot find a way to open just the glass of the rear hatch instead of the entire door... Is the glass handle just there for looks?

Awesome! Still learning new buttons and accessories for this rig even 2 years into ownership!Hi Hannah, there are two methods. First there should be a button on your fob. The right one, not the bottom.
Second, there is a secret button to the right of the license plate. It's a rubber covered switch that does wear out, so yours being a 2008, it may have fallen off and needs replacing. This video shows where it is and how easy it is to replace:

Ahhh very effective method there for sure, used it a few times on the tuff truck. You could always use a BFH if you get real frustrated!
Not the right fob but I have a button spot on the hatch itself, but as @swathdiver mentioned it is missing.Did you have the right key fob and the button that @Damnali541 was talking about?
I just changed one on Lola. Watch a video or two first for some tips, it’ll take about 5 minutes to change it.Not the right fob but I have a button spot on the hatch itself, but as @swathdiver mentioned it is missing.
Ordered a replacement on rockauto for $13... O'Reillys wanted $44 for the damn thing!
Yea, RA is a great source for parts if you can wait. Did you use the RA 5% discount code? Here is one you can use and can still apply to order as long as not shipped yet. They have "help" info about that. There are threads here that RA supplies discount codes to all of us.

Yep! Already watched a couple videos, looks pretty simple! Kind of already wishing there was more wire for the clip, it kind of looks like a pain not being able to pull it out farther but that video that @swathdiver posted on the first response had a pretty good pointer to help with that.I just changed one on Lola. No biggee, it would have only saved you $.65 for a $13 part.
Here are the two current RA 5% discount codes and their expiration dates:
153449072131744462
Expires Nov. 29, 2020
155733926131744462
Expires Dec. 27, 2020
When you use them you just type the code number in where the spot is for "Where or how did you hear about us".
Owners manuals are available to download for free in .pdf format.
They'll have all the info on all the buttons and controls in the vehicle

The one that got me, was I couldn't figure out why my lift gate wasn't opening. Come to find out, the overhead switch is a rocker switch, that you can turn off the lift gate.
