The fans are universal for the most part. My first set was from an 05 Yukon. The set in my truck now are for a `13 escalade. The only difference is the blade count. As long as you have the larger radiator it will fit. I believe it is 34" between each tank and 38" end to end.

Which one had more blade count? Did it make a difference?

The newer one had more blades. I think the purpose was to cut down on noise from the fans. Didn't notice a difference in the cooling. I was trying to track down an electrical problem was the reason for the switch.

I keep finding conflicting info when I search the web for coding for electric fans on a Tech2. Many places are saying it is not possible, but the post dates on these websites are from nearly 10 years ago (2009 at the latest). I was wondering if anything has changed since then?

A Tech2 *can* enable it, but only with a VCI from GM. That would be a custom-written software for your vehicle from GM Engineering that is then installed by the dealer. If you can convince them to do it and are willing to pay for it, then that would be an option.

Otherwise, any custom tuning software can enable that output on most vehicles and we even offer that as a standalone tuning service.

Hi, I have was getting ready to buy a new license for my autocal for my "new" 03 Yukon. I had to put it on hold for a little bit while I raise some cash. I do however have a set of fans I want to install, but will need them programmed. Can you give me some info on the standalone tuning for this - until I get the rest of the tune done?

You'd be amazed how well our trucks run without any fans. The big radiators are very efficient so cooloing shouldn't be an issue either way. Its hard to get the truck up to temp if everything is in good working order.

Tell me how long that works for you when you're sitting in traffic and its 120 out.

OK, so I called Dorman today. Since both the 620653 and 620654 will both bolt in to these trucks, I wanted to know what the difference was.

Apparently, the 620653 replaces the factory 5 and 7 blade fans. The 620654 replaces the 7 and 9 blade fans. The fan blades are the all the same on the Dorman replacements, but the 620654 spins at a higher RPM than the 620653 does to compensate for the fan blade count.

It looks like the 620654 has different motors than the 53 to spin the blades faster. This would explain the increase in amp draw with the 620654 units.

Now I just need to figure out which one I want for my '03 Yukon. The 54 would probably cool better, but may be more noisy. Probably should run a bigger alternator with that one, but still not sure if it would cause wiring or relay issues.

The 620653 should draw less amps, but don't know how well it will cool my rig when towing or running in really hot weather.

Why can't it just be simple....?

After searching I came up with conflicting part numbers for my application. Anyone with an 8.1 4l85e combo do this upgrade? If so, do you have the correct part number for the fans?

The newer one had more blades. I think the purpose was to cut down on noise from the fans. Didn't notice a difference in the cooling. I was trying to track down an electrical problem was the reason for the switch.

This was what I read somewhere else too, (that it was a slight redesign to make them quieter, but there was no real change in airflow). If you look up the part numbers for the 05-06 fans, you should see that they are superseded by the 07-13 fans. I read that they do draw more amps but IIRC it was 25 compared to 20. I found a new set of dormans (07-13) for less than $60

I never said your truck could function without fans, only that it takes a while for the truck to get up to operating temp just sitting. The quote is a little out of context but whatever..

I have both generations of fans..1 set from an 05 Yukon and the ones currently on my truck for a `13 Escalade.. there is an improvement in the newer fans..

What is the improvement? I'm looking for either better airflow or quieter. I bought a Dorman one, 620654, which had the same blade count as the 620653.
