What the heck can you store in the rear cargo compartment?

It doesn't seem big enough to put anything in other than maybe a first aid kit. My old 4Runner had a compartment like that as well in even a weirder shape. But that at least had a strap in it so I could put the hitch inside without it rattling around.

I wasn't sure if it was big enough for one. I have a recovery strap i might try to cram in there.

What compartment? The one on the side or the one where the jack is kept?

On the side. I haven't even checked out where the jack is. I tried pulling up on the thing but its on there pretty good! I figured I'd way until it was older than 1 day to start breaking things. ;)

It does require a lot of force to extract it.

Lack of storage is the price we pay for power liftgates and rear A/C. ;)

I've seen where some have mounted a battery box where the extra tray is in the LF corner. Sounds like a good idea for stuff not affected by heat.

I don't have a power liftgate. :(

I did finally pull the tray out to see where the jack is. It did take a good bit of force but nothing broke. :D

Yeah, that is one thing I miss from my 97 Tahoe, the extra bit of storage space. In the jack area I've got a pair of gloves, fire extinguisher, and jumper cables. Yep, it does take a fair amount of force to get that cover off. I have noticed with those rear panels off during my A/V build that there is some storage space below the hardware for the power lift gate that could be made use of. One would just need to fabricate a box to keep things from rolling all over and a door to access it.
