The PO added it so they don't have to unscrew the cap everytime they fill up?
I might want to do that myself..

Though any dirt on the flap surface will be dislodged by the pump nozzle and squirted into your gas tank...

By the looks of that truck, the Previous Owner seems no stranger to modifications. So wouldn't be that surprising if he did that too.
Nice truck!
My money is on the capless mod is messing with the EVAP system. I would try reverting it to stock to see if that helps with codes. Also suck any debris and zip the filter tube up as mentioned. Hit a local junkyard if you can't locate new parts, but it is important these parts are in good condition. They are part of the Evap system, which is sealed.

Looks like that capless thing is on there by pushing it on see if you can unscrew it and get a real gas cap….
I don't think so I went out the other day and compared the photo to mine and it's not a screw on option, you can see the little slots on the side if it was a screw on thing I don't think it would have those slots.
***pro tip don't try to stick a bellowed spout tip from a modern safety gas can gas in that thing it will get stuck like a chinese finger trap OR anything ribbed.
freaking &*^%$%%^^& mutherf-k
ask me how I know.....
I recommend keeping one of these in the glove box for adding anything to the tank other than a gas station nozzle

Ribbed, not for pleasure!
there is that outer flap and a another one inside about 2-3" in. both are spring loaded one-way. so.....
if you stick anything in there that is not smooth it's going to get stuck like chuck.
you cant even pour a liquid in, it just pools and spills out

Right. My 2012 Fusion is capless and the emergency filler comes with it, packed near the jack tools.

That's also how you can siphon gas out, on SOME of the capless designs.

If you're in Arlington (Tarrant county still requires emissions tests), then I wonder if it will pass emission testing with that capless since it isn't original equipment. They can be sticklers on the tests. Mine didn't pass with a new replacement CAI until I got an official C.A.R.B. placard from the manufacturer. And they always check the gas cap. I get inspected in Denton county.

I didn't even think about that. I'm good for another year on inspection and I have a inspection guy that will overlook things for an extra $20.
