Well if you turn the ignition and nothing happens, no noise no dimming of interior lights or head unit turning off for a second, I would look at an ignition switch. I am sort of baffled on why the jumper cables worked though, that makes it seem more like a battery issue.

The ignition switch is what I was thinking but a guy recommended looking at the solenoid connections to see if the second battery gave enough arc to jump the loose connection. But it recently happened and I tried the jumping method and nothing. So I was wondering if it could be my key wearing out??? I don't know I'm stumped checking connections now will get back but really don't want to spend 140 for ig switch if that's not it

Ok no loose wires.... But I did notice that my voltage meter was at a 9 when it wouldn't do anything this afternoon and when it does start its at a 11 or 12 so I'm wondering if you guys might think the positive wire is corroded or burnt up? I am still at a loss??

Where are you checking your voltage? How old is the battery? How do the wires look, can you see any greenish white powder by any of the connections?

I was reading it from my dash for the voltage. I checked the wires but they look fine. No corrosion on the posts. The battery is a year old maybe a bit older. I'm losing my mind on this one. It's so inconsistent. It can go a day without doing it 2 or do it then a few hours later do it again. The crazy thing is it did it right after I did a top end seafoam clean and never did anything like this before. I revved my engine to run the crap out afterwards went to the station and its been doing it randomly ever since. It's starts immediately with no hesitation then when it decides to screw up there is nothing from the engine when I turn the key. No click no dim no hesitation and Everything else works fine.

Ok this may be retarded but I checked the Ign fuses and they were fine. But I went through them one by one to see if pulled it gave me the same scenario as when this stupid crap happens. As I was pulling them I noticed a slight corrosion on the fuses. I pulled a 20a fuse from under the hood and it was really pretty corroded tried to start the truck and got the same response all power no start. So I'm wondering if this could be the reason that it starts most of the time but occasionally won't. Also I'm wondering if this is the reason that when it was jumped it immediately kicked over. Instead of having a loose wire that the current arced over when a second battery was connected, it was the fuse. What do you think?

Just remember corrosion is like rust, it spreads to everything it can. I would replace the fuse first, but look under the fusebox to make sure you don't have bigger problems developing.

Ok I am pretty sure I figured it out. I have been having a problem with my stereo where it would turn on but with no audio. I would turn the hoe off then back on and boom I get sound. So I figured out the radio amp fuse is right next to the ign fuse that I thought was the problem. Both were corroded. They are right on the edge of the junction box. I pulled relays and found no corrosion so I'm thinking my problem is right along that edge and water has seeped in over time and affected those fuses. So I'm pulling everything, cleaning and sealing. Thanks for the help! I hate electrical crap!

Cleaned the junction box and replaced the fuses. Started fine for a week then today out of the blue same problem. Anyone think it could be the lock cylinder? Or should I just bite the bullet and replace the ign switch?

did you look below the fuse box? chances are if there was corrosion above the box, there is corrosion below the box too. you might have wires below making a bad connection and that is what is giving you the issues. If the problem went away for a bit I would put money on more corrosion.

Ill take a look but I'm getting pissed now. Someone mentioned the starter having a dead spot causing the problem but now my tow haul comes on randomly and my radio lost all saved presets just from turning it off and restarting it. All day today it struggled to turn over as if my battery is weakening because of all the hits from trying to get it started. One minute it has signs of electrical the next mechanical!

Ok well I feel stupid. Finally fixed the problem! It was the altenator of all things. Would have never figured it out. Went down to get a load test on the battery. Well the orielly guy said the battery was fine but found it odd that the alt was a 60 amp, lol. So while it was running he put load after load on it and we saw the Amps drop before our very eyes. 60 58 56 49 ect. So folks what did we learn today? If you have an electrical problem go get your battery load tested and do multiple tests as you check your amperage!

Ok getting really pissed! It's baaaaack! Don't know why or how but this is pissing me off. So far new battery new altenator still the same problem. Don't understand how it goes away for weeks then starts right back up just as random and as often as before. I know I have to be in the right area of the issue or the problem wouldn't have gone away for a while. My only next option is to replace cables. What do you guys think?!

Ps the battery was 850cca only producing 500cca . When the problem started there was no corrosion on the cables. When I changed the battery there was a ton. So I'm wondering if the cable is corroded. Only way to check that I know of is to split open the cable unless someone has another way

Okay so I've narrowed the problem down to a heat issue under my hood. It seems that every time my truck runs for a prolonged period of time the fuse box and the battery area Under the hood Get extremely hot. So hot that when I tried to take out my battery and took off the bar across the top I actually burned my finger. Every time he gets too hot my truck will not start without a connection problem not a corrosion problem from any outside corrosion I can see and every time like I said the temperature gets too high if I thought my hood and open the fuse box cover let it sit for about five minutes it cools off enough to where the truck fires right up. Has anyone ever ran into this problem or does anyone know a solution to stop my truck from getting so hot

Don't know how or why heat would be involved. However, have you checked the other end of the battery cables. I know you checked the battery end, but what about the ground end of negative cable and other end of positive.

I have and no corrosion or loose cables. Still does it now that I know the problem it's not random at all. When the truck gets hot its a no start no crank. When it cools
Off enough it fires right up. I'm lost!
