I ordered a new main belt tensioner for my 08 Yukon (5.3) without looking at the original part first.

The new one (Delco #38158) has three mounting points where the factory original has two. The three point version is listed to fit on this model.

My water pump has the thread tap for the third bolt although it wasn’t used. If I grab another bolt, the three-point tensioner would fit.

Did GM revise these or is there a reason/preference for which one to use? I didn’t see a TSB for it on my 08.

I did the complete opposite. I had a 3 bolt originally and ordered a new one that used only two bolts. You can choose to add a 3rd bolt but not really needed.
