This is not good...

Hey guys, I just bought an 03 Tahoe because I have to take my kids to daycare and needed something with 4 seats. I knew that it had probably had a custom system in it at one point because all of the door speakers are Planet Audio, but only the front 2 speakers work...

Fast forward to yesterday, I bought a new HU and harness, etc. Pull the dash apart yesterday and noticed there are 2 harnesses in the dash. One looks like a factory harness and the other is the female end (looks like it's on backwards)

They are both spliced into eachother as far as I can tell... It really looks like a hack job. Also there are 3 sets of RCA cables hidden back in the dash (don't know where they run to as of yet.)

I took it to a sound shop here in Abilene, and they were going to install a sub and amp, and try to fix it. I got a call 15 minutes later and they told me that they wouldn't touch it in the condition it's in right now.

My question is, is where do I go from here? Maybe go to the junkyard and cut one out of a wrecked on and solder it in and start over? Is there a plug on the other end of the factory harness, to where I could just plug and play without having to splice in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is what I would do or if everything on the radio works except speakers just get an amp and run new speaker wire.

Do you have any pictures of this? They would help. Also the sound shop you took it too sounds like they are morons just looking for easy plug and play jobs and don't have the skills to actually rewire something....

i may be wrong and if i am someone please correct me, but in my yukon the factory wiring harness runs to the factory amp, you my be able to unplug it there and rewire one from the local salvage yard.

I would just get an amp. If you aren't an audiophile and just want sound from the back speakers, you can get something cheap that puts out 20ish watts RMS. I'd just use the existing patch cables. I would pull up the panels on either side of the vehicle that run along the edge from front to back. They come up very easy, just take your time. Pop your hood and see if there is an amp power wire attached to the battery (you can use this), if not, you will have to run one....everything is easy to run in these vehicles and you probably have a hole in the firewall somewhere from the previous owners system. Let me know if you are going to take on this project before I go further.

or you can try to figure out why the back speakers aren't working. I would start by taking the door panels off and seeing if they are connected. Does the vehicle have RSE? If that was disconnected, I believe it takes out the rear speakers.

Some people run without any rear speakers at all and rely on their front stage for sound. do you need the rears?

the way this sounds to me as that

1) whoever owned it previously probably hooked the front stage up to head unit power to show that everything works

2) the rear is disconnected and was previously connected to an amp and he didnt want to do the work to hook the rear back up to HU power

3) that stereo shop is retarded, if you start to pull panels i'm almost certain you will find three sets of RCA's around the rear seat or maybe in the center console underneath the tray or even in the cargo space


someone who puts planet audio and 3 sets of rca's means he was probably somewhat knowledgable, not saying he did everything correct, but he had to have an idea, and there was at one time a 5 channel or a 4 channel and a mono amp for the sub in that truck


as stated above, take a picture of the harness behind the radio, i'm curious to see what it looks like
