Hey guys, I hope someone can help me with this? At startup after my 2008 LTZ has sat for a while (after driving it for a while) I get a strange noise, sounds like a machine gun or a large air compressor. It continues for a few seconds up to one minute. I have noticed that if I turn off the A/C button when it starts it goes away. I live where it can get real humid and I notice it happens more on hot days with high humidity. Also, I can drive in the morning, park and then go out 4-5 hours later and I get the noise.

Is it the A/C belt, compressor clutch or something else in the system?

The A/C blows cold, no warning lights or anything else.

Please help!!!!!

The only sound I know of during start-up is the Autoride compressor. Is it from inside the vehicle, or outside?

Sound like it is outside, if I rev the motor or turn off the the A/C it goes away. It does not happen all the time.

I'm having the same issue. I took my yukon back to dealship under warranty to replace the belts and it still occurs every now and then. Did you ever try anything or get a fix for the problem?

Can you get someone else to start the car and sit in it, then tell us where the noise is coming from?

I bet its the compressor clutch bearings about to go out.
Mine makes that noise very slightly during normal temperatures, and very loudly when its cold out. I am waiting till it takes a shit so I can tell the dealer "I told you so!" I have told thema bout the noise like 5 times and they can never recreate it.

It seems like it always happens when my truck it sitting out in the sun and not in my garage. A/C is left on from a previous drive. Go to crank up and it sounds like a belt is slipping but very loud and a little bit of a whistle. Last for about 10 seconds then stops. Brought it to the dealer and they changed the belts (at least they told me they did?!?!) and it still happens every now and then. Very aggrevating to have on such a new vehicle and I was hoping others have heard about this so I could get a fix for it. Other than this little problem truck is great!!!

Hello,

I see there are a few people having this problem and the dealership was unable to fix the problem. Please let me know if you would like me to contact the dealership and look further into this situation.

Geoff - Have you ever heard of any customers having this issue or is this the first you have heard of this problem at start up?

Hello,

I have not heard of this issue until reading through this thread. However, I do document similar problems that seem to happen within the same model years of vehicles and forward the information for the engineers to review. If you are experiencing problems and having trouble getting them resolved, please let me know.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the response. I am having the following startup noise issues.
- Very loud metal on metal grinding sound with bad shaking. Very infrequent, about once a quarter. This one worries me the most because it sounds like the engine is about to fall apart.
- High pitch squealing sound (sounds like serpentine belt issue) when it is cold and/or humid outside. The dealer addressed it the first time but now it is back.
- Loud tapping sounds at start-up that lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes. This happens during start-ups in the morning a few times a week.
- Similar startup sound like the OP. Almost like a large compressor having a hard time running.

Like I said, I have brought the truck in 3 times for overnight stays so they can troubleshoot, and requested multiple inspections during routine oil changes. However, they could not reproduce the issues.

Any help would be appreciated. PM me for truck and dealer info.

CLEX,

I am sorry to hear that you are having an issue with your vehicle. Have you been into the dealership for this issue? If so, how long ago?

Thank you,

I have the same sound/issue with my 08 Yukon. Happens more when I use the remote start function. Sounds like a small compressor kicking on and last about 2-4 seconds. It's going in for service this week for this and other issues. I'll post up there response....

There is another thread with this issue and here is the problem. At start up, the A/C compressor clutch engages a few seconds after engine startup. Depending on the amount of driving and soak time(sitting since shut off), the compressor may not have enough R134a in it and that is what causes the machine gun sound. According to others here, there is a GM service bulletin addressing the issue. check with your dealer, I am going next week and will be asking the service mgr. to look into this.
