Since this is a how-to, for the steering wheel, I wanted to add a note about replacing the _wheel_ itself. Once you get all of the air bag and spokes/controls off, a 20-mm socket will remove the nylock nut from the steering column. Once off, you can rock the wheel back and forth a bit, and it comes right off. No need for a wheel puller (in fact, there's no provision for one) to get the thing off. Additionally, there's an arrow on the frame of the factory wheel and a corresponding notch in the steering shaft to aid in aligning the two together so you're not 'turning right' when going straight down the road.

I attempted this today. When I began loosening my first larger fastener with T30 bit, the horn started blaring. I did not disconnect the airbag as indicated in the first few steps, but I figured that should not cause the horn to sound.
What am I doing wrong...or should I just disconnect the battery cables for this project?

I would advise just following it step by step and you won't have a problem. When I did this years ago I did exactly as the steps indicate and had no issues with the horn and didn't have to disconnect anything.

BUT, if you continue going the route you are then by all means disconnect the battery and the horn will stop beeping at you.

Will re-attempt per specific steps this weekend.

I disconnected the battery just to be safe and completed the swap....but reconnecting the battery makes the horn blare nonstop. Ugh

How do I fix this?

Take it back apart and redo it is the only way. When putting it back together something isn't 100% correct if the horn is consistently blaring.

Took it all apart, checked everything twice, put it back together.
Still get horn blaring as soon as I touch positive battery cable to post.
Kinda stumped.

Checked it once more and realized one of the horn contacts was not aligned properly. DUH! Fixed it and all good.

I'm now an expert at removing the airbag assembly.

Still get horn blaring as soon as I touch positive battery cable to post.
Kinda stumped.

Me too trying to figure out why.. tahoe has to get inspected tomorrow can't just disconnect it. I always find the worse times to do mods

Take it apart again and be careful to tuck the copper terminals behind the plastic fittings on the steering wheel. I did not notice this at first, but if they are out in front of the plastic fittings they will make contact as soon as you assemble the horn back in place.

Why can't our preferred vendor the Grafix shop supply us with precut vinyl for this issue, seems to me they would have a gold mine. come on guys GET ON BOARD or maybe you are not a preferred vendor in my opinion !!
