Spare Tire Lock Cyclinder Housing Retainer

Anyone found a good solution for getting a new spare tire lock cylinder housing retainer in place? I bought a new one after I pried the old one off (I don't know how you do that without ruining it and preventing its re-use) for a new rear bumper install, but having a hard time getting the new one to fit. Are there other solutions for keeping that piece secure? Without the retainer ring, the housing is loose and can be moved around from the outside. And I can't stand that.

seems to me the install would be the exact reverse of what is done in the video, push it in until it clips into the retainer, you might need a new retainer or bend the clips back into place first seems kind of straight forward

One would think. I didn’t find that to be the case. I got a new clip and a new retainer. The clip is easy. Fits right onto the tube. Getting that retainer to fit around it, clip to the hole, and stay coiled is a PITA. Haven’t figured it out yet. Some of the weird design stuff that Chevy used on these trucks continues to mystify me. This thing is a round retainer piece that is supposed to fit into a square hole and hold securely. Seriously. They make jokes about that kind of thing.

maybe you need to use some kind of crows foot adapter to hold or push the clip on? there has to be a way...

I installed one on my 02, remember it was kind of a PIA but that’s all I remember. Just mess with it until it works I guess.
