Hi all, I picked up a cheap Yukon recently and it's giving a P0449 code for electrical issues with the Vent solenoid so I just went ahead and ordered one. When I got under the truck I soon realized that the current solenoid isn't even plugged in. So I plan to clean the contacts on the harness that's been dangling for who knows how long and install the selenoid and hook it back up. BUT, do these things fall off ever or did someone unplug it for some reason?

Also, in addition to the code the PO told me he had trouble pumping gas. That's related to this issue right? I also hear a whining coming from the tank under the driver's side rear door. It's not loud I only heard it because I was knelt down in that area. Is that normal or is my fuel pump screaming for mercy?

Last question (for now). In the picture you can see the wire harness dangling but there's also what appears to be another hard plastic line just kinda hanging out up there. What the heck does that goto?

Probably unplugged on purpose. Same for that other line going to the canister. Fuel pumps are noisier when the tank is low on fuel.

You can spend a couple hundred replacing all those parts and hoses or throw them in the garbage and have the codes turned off in the tune. We're still in limbo, the federal emissions regulations have been deep sixed but congress hasn't codified them into law yet.

Well interestingly New Hampshire just got rid of inspections starting in January. I was just concerned with what that other hose is supposed to goto, it doesn't seem to be throwing a code because the only one I get is the P0449.

Interesting that you referenced NH law changes. I was at my shop this morning, and the Mechanic told me that they've received no concrete guidance from the State on exactly how to implement the upcoming change in the law. In fact, they plan to continue to do annual inspections for their continuing customers, if they don't receive more concrete advice from the State, just to avoid potentially getting sued by someone who has a catastrophic failure, and then blames the them for not noticing it and formally advising them of the deficiency.

Not real surprising on the lack of guidance when government is involved, haha. It's still not a bad idea for people get their vehicles inspected annually anyway. I saw somewhere a write up on how it affects us as consumers but I also haven't come across any articles referencing inspection stations.

I will DEFINITELY request an annual inspection from my shop, just in case that they find something that I overlooked. I don't have to act on any findings, if I interpret what little information is available on this change in the NH law, but I will continue to be liable for any related issues that arise. It just makes good sense, IMO.

Just to report back now that I actually had a chance to make this repair (I really need a garage). It appears that the relocation kit/upgrade had been done on this which moved the evap selenoid up above the spare tire and the loose hose I saw was simply the old one. They just left it there rather than pulling it out. I installed the new evap selenoid and connected to the hard plastic tubing with some 5/8" heater hose. I also clipped the old wiring because the plug was just caked with dirt and I installed a new plug. Started the truck and the engine light cleared. Success! On to the next issue.

Oh also, I took apart the old unit and the little charcoal filter wasn't even in there and the inlet hole was pretty plugged up with fine dirt/sand

FWIW the correct name of the evap vent contraption is "solenoid."

Got spell check? ;)
