I just bought a 2014 Yukon Denali and had this problem as well. One kid's phone worked, the other's didn't.

The secret I found while crawling the interwebz?

YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SONG DOWNLOADED IN ITUNES!!!

The phone that worked had a few purchased songs on it. We bought a song on the other phone and for the low low price of $1.29 - NOW IT WORKS. We use it to stream Spotify through the cable. it also charges the phone at 1.3-1.5 amps (read via a charger voltage app). That's a win and most likely sounds better than bluetooth streaming audio.

the radio must be looking for a folder to unlock the iPod input and that folder is created when a song (not a ringtone - we tried that first) is downloaded to the phone.

Hopefully this post helps someone else!
