My transfer case is making a metal on metal sound.. right when I take off in first gear.. it’s loud. Like a chain rubbing a piece of metal, for about 3-4 seconds, I let off the gas and get back on it and it’s gone.. truck driving perfectly normal and shifts normal until I come to stop, then does it again.

Doesn’t make a sound in reverse. I click the 4HI button and the sound is gone. So it must be the transfer case.

The question is, should I have a shop rebuild it or just buy a refurbished one?

I just confirmed with my friend and neighbor who owns his European auto shop, we used his electronic listening devices that he placed on the trans, motor and transfer case that the sound is in fact coming from the T-case.

Has anyone used this company “the gear shop”? I found this for the NP243

Any recommendations you guys have?

Ok so ordered a rebuilt T-case from “The Gear Shop” in MD, arrived last week. Today I’ll be making the swap.
In their instructions as seen if you zoom in on the green paper, they say to use 5w-30 synthetic motor oil for lubricant instead of the traditional T-case oil… anyone heard of that before?

The first versions of chain drives in 70's- Almost ALL aftermarket recommended motor oil. By the mid/late 80's it was an accepted substitute. Like using motor oil in an Allison.
