My 2023 Sierra has HUD but the sped limit sign is blank. I thought it had something to do with my OnStar not working but I found out it works by using one of the front camera.

I’ve gone in the DIC menu and made sure the option is on and that the front cameras are clean. I feel like if it was the camera it would work from time to time, which isn’t the case. It hasn’t worked since I got it in August.

I read about clearing the cache in maps but I’m not sure how to do that.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Wes, I didn’t know that was a thing either. What I’m hunting for is called traffic sign recognition. On the driver display and heads up display there’s an image of a speed limit sign that’s supposed to display the last sign the camera saw. My display shows the signs, they’re just blank white squares. I’m going to try that other feature tomorrow.

As far as I know, the "Speed Limit" sign in the Displays (Instrument Panel Cluster and HUD) uses the speed limit info from the Google Maps it downloads. If you have no Data Plan for your vehicle, you have no speed data.
Pretty sure this is how it works, because whenever my system is updating offline maps, the speed limit sign shows "--"
If you have no data paln, and get sick of seeing "--" you can turn off the speed limit display in the options for the Instrument Panel.

Thanks. My OnStar module is down and the dealer is waiting for a new one. That’s the first I’ve heard of a possible data plan issue. I’ve seen everything from it coming from the front camera, google maps, or a combination of the 2. When OnStar is fixed I’ll report back.

I have no data plan or OnStar (I refuse to pay a monthly subscription for my $90k car, but that's another discussion), the speed limit signs in the instrument panel and HUD still work for me (at least driving around locally in the city/ suburbs, haven't taken the Tahoe out to the middle of nowhere recently to check).

Could be you are running on previously downloaded maps. Not sure how long they stick around after Data Plan is cut off. As long as an offline map is present, speed will show, I believe.

That's entirely possible I suppose. We never had a data plan except for whatever trial period was included (the first three or six months maybe,,, something like that). And of course we live in the same house / drive around the same areas now as we did when we first brought the thing home.

We also have a diesel Excursion that we normally take on the longer family road trips (just more room and more reliable than the 6.2 in the Tahoe), so we've never really taken the Tahoe more than four hours or so away (which we live in Texas, a four hour drive here is considered "just around the corner").

I’m interested to see what happens after OnStar is fixed. I agree the sign probably isn’t dependent on a data plan and shouldn’t rely on an OnStar account either. I removed the sign from HUD and the dash for my sanity.

I went into the system to delete the cache from maps but I didn’t see an option to remove it from turn-by-turn. Any ideas there or how I can force an

Can my phone hotspot be used for the data it needs to update? I haven’t looked into that but I am using CarPlay.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I’m waiting for the stealer to call me when they have a new OnStar module to install.

They got the new module Friday and installed it today. I registered with OnStar a few minutes ago and turned speed sign back on while in my driveway. When I go somewhere I’ll report back to see if that fixed it. BTW I got the usual 90 day trial free but $42.99 after it expires. No way! I also got 8 years left of the features I may use.

I have always been effective in "negotiating" a better price w/ OnStar...key is, sign up for a month, then call and just say "I want to cancel". they usually ask why, then you say it is too expensive...then you start a price negotiation.

I got $10 to bet you your speed limit starts working now that you have an active data plan.

OnStar solved it. I turned the sign recognition back on while driving and nothing changed. But when I turned the truck back on after getting out the speed limit was there.

One thing the OnStar agent told me was there was a recall on something with OnStar module. So if you’re OnStar works but sign recognition doesn’t that recall may fix it. My rig is a ‘23 Sierra. I don’t know which models it covered.

Thanks to all for the help.

Ya owe me $10...JK...glad it works.

Clarification, you didn't turn "sign recogintion" back on, because the vehicle doesn't have "sign recognition." You turned on the speed limit display in the Instrument Cluster (and maybe the HUD), right?

The check’s in the mail. I hope a post dated, 3 party, out of state check is ok. You’re correct speed limit display in both placed. Funny bc right after I posted it worked it stopped but on my next trip it worked again except my neighborhood is 55 mph.
