Shifter problem

I have 1995 gmc yukon 5.7 4x4 stock trany and transfer case,the shifter wont go into park go as far as R but have to put parking brake on to keep from rolling down drive way. put in N and it starts fine shifts just fine .just wont go into park....what i get for letting a women drive my lady.....any help will be grate full shes got 289,000 still goning strong thanks for any help...

any chance there is other sloppiness in the shifting mechanism? any chance the shift cable under neath the carpet has worn thru its sheathing? it goes down the column circles underneath the driver carpet and thru the tranny tunnel.

Pull the cable from the side of the trans and see if the shifter goes into P then, if it does the linkage or something in the tranny is shot. It's possible to bend that rod inside.

tried this

can get trany to go into park by pulling cable,,could this be in my shifteror am i screwd with a tranny problem??? any help is thank full

LOL I must have missed that the first time, I doubt it's a stock tranny with 300K.

yes can get tranny to go into park by shifting with cable side of tranny,yes there is alot of sloppyness in the shifter it self, thinking it has to be in the shifter itself??? where do i start on that end????yes tranny has been replaced,rebuilt one,,,guy put unaversals in it and 3 days later daughter going down the road abought 70 and it came out,he replaced the tranny and transfer case,stood behind his work,there are stll good guys out thete.wish he was close by to help with this....thanks guys.....

I will ask one last time.

Did you check the cable under the drivers carpet area by physically pulling up the carpet there and looking for a worn sheathing?

what will i be looking for in the c/s area.does any one have a skamatic of all parts.dont have know how or tools to be takeing off sterring wheel and such.sorry for being such a burden....

can see alittle. holly lots of crap batman,looks way over my head.is the shift mechanism in there???? well does my sterrinr wheel and all that have to come off????
