rear trans seal

i have a 2wd 5.3 and im leaking fluid out of the back of the trans where the driveshaft goes into i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they fixed it thanks. mike

I have the same problem, even though mine was recently rebuilt which is another story I will be dealing with next week.

What can happen is that seal ages and can swell and when it unswells it can leak..

is it as easy as taking the driveshft out and just slideing a new seal in or a bit more complicated. thanks mike

Well the seal has a metal surround so you will need a hammer and flat head screw driver to get the old one out. Be careful not to scar up the housing of the transmission. I know there are some press tools out there to aid in seating the new seal but in most cases if you get the new seal started evenly you can use a 2x4 flat against it and tap it in til seated. Don't use the end of the board.
