GM switched from 8.5" to 8.6" in 1999, so as long as yours has 10 bolts in the rear differential cover, it will be an 8.6". Regardless, they both use the same ring and pinion gear with the primary difference between them being the carrier bearings.I have a 2014 Chevy Tahoe PPV (2wd) with 3.08 and RPO "G80". I am considering the 3.42 or 3.73 with stock size tires. I was looking to see if what I have is the 8.5 or 8.6 and if it a old school standard ring and pinion? Stan

Just a ring and pinion swap.So do you want to regear or swap out the whole axle? If the latter, stay with the same generation.

Ok. If you don't already know, the axles were made by AAM and you can get their part numbers and diagrams and such from www.demandaam.com.Just a ring and pinion swap.
