I have a 2014 Chevy Tahoe PPV (2wd) with 3.08 and RPO "G80". I am considering the 3.42 or 3.73 with stock size tires. I was looking to see if what I have is the 8.5 or 8.6 and if it a old school standard ring and pinion? Stan

GM switched from 8.5" to 8.6" in 1999, so as long as yours has 10 bolts in the rear differential cover, it will be an 8.6". Regardless, they both use the same ring and pinion gear with the primary difference between them being the carrier bearings.

I had a 2002 LT with 3.73 gears and loved the accel from a stop. Could tell the lack of that with my current 3.42 gears in my 05 Z71. I now have a BB tune and it woke up again for me. IMO, if fuel mileage is not a concern, do the 3.73 but know this, if you constantly stomp on it and pull with it and generally abuse it, the smaller pinion gear could wear way quicker than you might think. Plus, make sure you use quality gears and not cheap generic crap that you will regret. Do you already have a qualified shop to do the work or are you going to do it? Setting up gears is not for an experiment in your abilities.

So do you want to regear or swap out the whole axle? If the latter, stay with the same generation.
