I bought a new axle and the damn thing has the inboard joint pulled apart. Boot is intact and not torn. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and get an exchange but I thought I'd ask to see if there's a way to work that little tripod back into it's seat without taking the boot off since I really wanted to install it tonight. Some cars you can, most you can't. How about Tahoe/Yukons?

I have no patience and answered this myself lol. No, you can't work the end back into the cage unless you have a lot of luck. The bearings ride about 3/4 of the way over on the little tripod shafts and if they slip out of the cage, they won't be in position to just slide back in. I took the big band off with the axle standing on end, slid the boot down and lifted the end off. I pushed the bearings back into position with a finger and slid the end back on. Didn't even lose any grease. Not big deal, just annoying.
