They have undoubtedly dealt with a lot of 6L80s that were in the K2 trucks, the generation after ours. Those have a different cooling system that typically kills those transmissions' torque converters after about 100K miles due to too much heat. These older 6L80s don't have that problem. People in general don't have great institutional memories.
Ok, that might explain why they said that at the dealership.... as far as towing, it's pretty consistent under heavier load (uphill, warm weather) but doesn't drop much otherwise. I was thinking a larger capacity pan with the new gears. Just replaced both oil and tranny cooling lines, had everything checked and looked good. This was done at my normal garage, not the dealership.

Next step is installing a bigger capacity transmission pan and 3.73 (camper towing).
My fluid temps get to 240°f, and I know these torque converter clutches have a history of not being the greatest.
Fixed it for you.
That said, you likely need to 'flip the pill' (CORRECTION: yours does not have to worry about this 'pill'),
and also should seriously consider an ATF cooler upgrade of some kind.

Thanks! Swathdiver commented the dealership may have been thinking of a different trans... I had both sets of cooling lines replaced, mechanic said the cooler looked good, but I may start looking at an upgrade. The pan isn't terrible, about $300, and with my buddy we can do it.

I'm still wondering how the dealership determined it was a PPV, guess they didn't run the vin and just said "yup"
Standard procedure for salespeople..
Tell 'em what they want to hear. Or just nod.

I'd be interested in learning what 1FL and 5T5 spell out.
All I could find, I think FL might be a fleet specification..
The 2022 PPV brochure says 1FL is required if you want the 9C1 package

1FL - PACKAGE FL OPTION 1
5T5 - SEAT OVERRIDE (SEO)

Thanks for the correction. More details, please, so I can get learned?
The K2s with the 6L80 and transmission thermostat have a different cooling system for the transmission. Their fluid goes into the cooler built into the top of the AC condenser and back to the trans. Because the fluid doesn't get preheated anymore like the old way of first going into the radiator, a thermostat was used as its substitute.

Those GMT900s with the external engine oil cooler (KC4) have a thermostat built into the lines coming off the oil pan to the radiator. Same design and concept.

Liking this would be damning it with faint praise. It deserves the 'Helpful' Check mark.

Hmm, interesting. This is a fleet designation but I thought it was reserved to Suburbans. I see now he doesn't have 5W4 nor the wiring options, so I stand corrected!

"5T5 seats, cloth front vinyl rear - Vinyl 2nd row rear seats and cloth front seats; if AS3 third row seat is ordered, it will be vinyl. Requires: AZ3 front custom cloth 40/20/40 bench seat or A95 front custom cloth high-back bucket seat, trim code 19D Ebony and PEG 1FL
OPTIONAL Front: cloth bucket with center console (power driver side seat only) A95 19C Rear: vinyl 60/40 split-bench 5T5"

In 2012, the 5-6 VIN positions are for the vehicle type. A K2 would mean a 4x4, 1/2 ton Chevrolet Tahoe Police Vehicle. This truck is a K4, meaning a 4x4, 1/2 ton Chevrolet Tahoe FL, or fleet vehicle.

RPO GAM identifies it as being built for government use. It did not originally come with a G80 locker, just 3.42 gears. Very common with Chevrolet.

I'd be interested in learning what 1FL and 5T5 spell out.

Cool truck regardless.
Well I do not see the RPO Code 5W4 so it would not be an SSV? Now I am confused as I thought all the police 4x4's were SSV's?

All I know for sure is that it was a Homeland Security truck out of Texas, according to the paperwork from the previous owner that bought it at govt auction. No radio counsel, spot lights or warning lights ever installed, no evidence of plugged antenna holes anywhere.

GAM= Vehicle Government (GSA Sales) so it's a US Government vehicle ordered by the General Services Administration and probably an admin fleet Tahoe since you don't have a 5W4 RPO code. VEHICLE GOVERNMENT (G.S.A. SALES)

In addition to @opfor2 information provided, the VIN also gives it away. The 5-6 positions are K4 and not K2. The latter is for a 4x4 Police Tahoe. The former is a 4x4 Government Fleet vehicle.

So, I was told by the previous owner and Hendrick Chevy that I have a 4x4 tow package PPV. Apparently, according to the dealership, Chevy did in fact make PPV models with those options. I was under the impression that 4x4 was automatically SSV. Not that it makes a big difference to me, but im running into issues with the garage I'm going to have replace the 3.42 gears with 3.73. They (the garage) want to confirm what trim they're dealing with. Im attaching the glove compartment codes for reference.
Thank you for any help....
Steve

EDIT* I'm not sure why, but I can't upload the image.... sorry about that!
The police package is nice. It is most likely the Daytime Running Lights have already been deactivated so you don't have to bother with that. Engine stop-start will also be deactivated so that'll save you another hundred dollars on the gadget that does that.

Yes, the DRL's are deleted... besides changing out the gears, maybe the torque converter, I'm almost done with getting it where I want it to be!

Hey y'all, thanks for the replies... I tried to post the RPO to as many as I could. I guess the dealership just looked at it and said "yeah, it's a PPV" Next step is installing a bigger capacity transmission pan and 3.73 gears (camper towing). My fluid temps get to 240°f and I know these trannys have a history of not being the greatest
More trans fluid probably wouldn't hurt, but an additional trans cooler definitely does the trick it is pretty easy to do if you already have the auxiliary trans cooler especially.

This 6L80 and 5.3 (DoD deleted but hardware still inside) has 276k miles. :)

And welcome, neighbor. I work in Orange County, live in Mebane....
Howdy neighbor! Chapel Hill here... Im at 160k, runs like new after all the work done. Not in search of more HP, but need to drop the trans temp when towing. Otherwise she's perfect!
