Pieces underneath the Denali

I apologize for not knowing the specific part, but I noticed two pieces that are below the front of the Denali placed near the front wheels. I wanted to check the purpose, because I think it takes away a little from the look. I don't think the AT4 or Z71 Tahoe have those pieces. Also, if I were to get the Denali, can they be removed and would it have a detrimental effect?

Curious about those myself. Almost like a wheel guard. Maybe so road debris doesn't get caught up in the wheel well? Just throwing out random ideas...
