Hey all,

I've had my 2010 Yukon for over a year now and I still can't decide where to put my phone mount. I've got the suction cup style which I've put on the dash in previous cars. I just don't really want to this time because it tends to damage the dash. I'm getting close to saying screw it, though, because I just need it mounted. Can anyone share where they put theirs or, even better, show a pic?

I've considered just to the left or right of the hump over the gauge cluster, low on the A-pillar, or even mounting it low with the arm reaching up.

Thanks in advance for the input!

Yeah, I've considered going with a vent clip style. That thing holds on tight, doesn't fall off the vent or drop the phone?

My cup holders are almost always in use. We never go anywhere without drinks (non-alcoholic of course). LOL

Nope. If you firmly place the holder in the vent and then fully insert your phone between the spring-loaded clamp fingers, it will remain secure.

I have this one in my truck and I love it. Its a little lower than some may like but I wanted something clean and simple and out of the way.
I love how clean the ProClip mounts are, but I can't justify $80. Finances are tight and, if I'm completely honest, running without a mount doesn't really suck. My phone fits in the recessed area of the center console cover.

I am in the exact same place. I got it for Christmas otherwise I would be keeping mine in the same center console area lol.

I have a mount that attaches to the windshield & dash so I can see the phone easier while driving for Waze and Torque Pro. I personally like having it as close to my line of sight as possible, without having it obstruct any view out of the windshield... I don't like having to move my head to see the screen.

Although, I might try to find a new one with wireless charging and a better clamp.

@PNW_IT_Guy, I used to drive a 2012 GMC Y-XL for a living
as a livery / chauffeur in NY / NJ / CT / PA / MA from 2013-2017, over 150,000 miles.

Were I you, I'd use a vent clip on the center left vent, placed so it's not in the way of the shifter.
Bought a simple double spring loaded vent clip from a carwash for $4 ($7 now, still worth it).
Some only open one part, you want the one that opens both.
Install it carefully once, don't mess up the part that snugs up with the vent louvres.
It never dropped my phone, even on rough terrain or potholes, held on TIGHT.
Magnetic ones SEEM like a good idea, most won't pass a 'rough terrain or potholes' test.

Willing to pay a bit more?
Buy one of those arm-thingies that attaches with a suction cup to the dash,
and the other end holds the phone, again, close to the left vent in your pic.
Keep the phone close to the DIC's 4 buttons so you can keep eyes on the road.

I'm in the same boat. I've been lazy about mounting my phone. But SC just passed a new hands-free law. And my commute has grown to almost 40 miles each way, requiring daily GPS use to avoid traffic issues. I wanted to mount it to the left of the center stack. But I realize now that the shifter arm will block it from view while driving. So I'm thinking just above the DIC/left-center vent as Marky suggested, so I can see reroute prompts without taking my eyes off the road.

It looks like the Pro Clip mounts rely on wedging between trim pieces, and require two seams to hold. They don't really have a solution for where I want to mount the phone. And I'd rather not block my favorite vent (which rules out vent mounts). How well do the suction cup ones hold on the textured dash? That seems unlikely to hold well.

Does anyone make something that uses the dash mounting hardware behind the trim? I might use CAD (cardboard aided design) to figure out something like that. Even if I have to notch a trim piece, the parts yards are full of cheap replacements in the unlikely event that I sell the Yukon.

I use this mag puck mount. You can unscrew the vent fingers off it and mount it to the radio bezel with 3m tape. Only thing that sucks is the shifter blocks the screen when in drive. But it's nice just to plop the phone right on there and not block the AC vent or get AC "burn" on the phone so when you get out of the car it fogs up. And I can rest my arm on the console lid and reach the phone comfortably.

Like I said the only downfall is when the shifter is in the way but I live with it.

Pro clips are the Best mounts I’ve ever used. Currently have one in my 2013 Yukon xl. I used a scoche magnetic charger mount which is compatible with apples MagSafe. Works perfect for mine and the wife’s phones. Magnet is strong and charges while it’s on there. Simple no worries.

RAM mounts also has some options but not cheap either. Other than a vent clip which I can’t stand, if you want a good solid mount you’ll have to pay a little more $$.

Good luck, let us know what you end up with.

I think a Pro Clip is my backup plan at the moment. But I'm reluctant to spend $45 on something that doesn't really suit my needs.

I'm working on a metal bracket that will attach behind the trim piece that contains the vents, stick through the upper seam above the DIC and left-most vent, and allow the phone to sit above it. Ideally it will be entirely above that vent, and entirely below my line of sight to the bottom of the windshield. The bracket is not simple. And my fabrication skills aren't very good. So it's slow going.

If I do get the Pro Clip, I'll still have to add a flat piece to move the phone up to the position I described. This may stress the Pro Clip to the point of failure, or at least wobbliness.

I am going to do a full(er) writeup in its own thread when I'm done with my setup, but for now here it is. I fabricated a couple of brackets using my hobby-size CNC machine to hold my phone and tablet. In short, these mount through clearance holes in the trim piece and are fastened to the structure via plastic-specific rivet nuts from McMaster-Carr. The angles might look a bit wonky due to the lens, but they're parallel to the sides of the radio/HVAC (not to each other) and are perpendicular to the trim face. I'll be adding a bar between them (due to the tablet vibrating, but will also keep sun off the display) and painting them black (SEM 39143). The top of the phone is below my line of sight and the shift lever moves around the phone without any interference (Pixel 7A, ~6"x3").

I got this one

Yes the proclip setups are expensive, but you can sign up for email deals and that helps drop the price pretty decently. After trying a couple different ones, and vents breaking, i decided the saying "pay once, cry once" was going to worth it. Its 100% worth the money. It holds the phone perfectly, no shaking or vibrating, have a power cable run up to it. It does kinda block air flow from that vent, but use the AC so little its fine

I think it's going to work. I got it mocked up tonight. It still needs some minor cleanup on the edges and paint. Teaser photo...

All done.

Here's what I ended up with:

1000009873.jpg

It's made from 14 gauge stainless steel I had left over from another project. I used CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to work out the shape. It grabs one of the dash mounting holes and an unused hole back inside the dash structure.

Prepped for paint:

Painted:

Mounted in dash with 17mm ball mount attached:

Trim installed:

Driver's view. It's exactly where I want it. Above the DIC and vent. Below the windshield. The ball mount and phone cradle are Chiwanese Amazon items that together cost about $35. The cradle even has matte silver and carbon fiber highlights to match my interior.

So far, I'm happy with it. When the shifter is in Park, it blocks the screen. But it's clear when driving, which is more important. It does vibrate a little when in Park. But in use driving around it seems to be solid enough. Time will tell.
