I'm sure this has been asked before, but my 3 year btb expires next week.
I can't figure out what infotainment/nav features I'm going to lose when Onstar expires.
And is it worth it to renew?
TIA!

You should have 8 years of basic OnStar, at least I do. If you want their data, use voice control for maps, or use thei app on your phone to control your rig then maybe. I just couldn’t justify $42 for this. With CarPlay I have what I need.

I only paid 24 a month on my 2021. Did everything I wanted for the price of a decent pizza. Got 3 yrs with new one, so we will see what it costs when we get there....

There are a couple of choices for plans. Just confirm you got the 8 years of the basic plan free.

What you get for free is nothing you really want. It’s for them to use your data, to tell you about issues you need to have repaired. I only use the Lowe end plan to allow remote start from my iPhone or watch. They do have options for customers that are less than the rack price, but you have to ask, and I mean really ask. If they think you are going to walk, then the price gets lower.

The infotainment system gets pretty well neutered without a data plan, at least in the 2022. You will be limited to AM/FM/XM if you subscribe to it. The apps (including google maps) will cease to work or update. They have changed the names of the packages 2 or 3 times since I got my rig in feb of 2022.

Net, though, you will need have at least “OnStar Connect” to get your remote commands and maps and apps to work. If the classic OnStar stolen vehicle, crash assist, hit a button for an advisor is a service you want, that is Safety and Security. If you need Video Streaming, Games, and the WebBrowser (if equipped) you need is Connect Plus. I thought you also need Connect Plus for the HotSpot, but it may depend on the model year of your vehicle. It’s all broken down at OnStar.com.

I’ve had some success getting a discount by calling them and asking to “cancel my service.” As the first word out of my mouth. But that works best after you are a paying customer.

Best advice, let it expire, see what is missing, call and get that turned on for a month, then call to “cancel my service” to begin negotiating. Same schema works well with SirriusXM if you value their service.

Good luck.

Yuo're right Walleye, the infotainment system is basically a brick without connectivity! Gonna try onstar connect for a month.
