Anyone knows how does Oil life meter works? I know this much that it just calculates rpm and miles to give percentage, but does it like measure the the oil life or just calculates.

Good question. I am old school and have the oil changed every 5,000. Most trips I make are short in nature so why run the risk of taking the oil too far. My two cents.

It doesn't actually analyze the chemical composition and physical structures of the oil. It factors mileage, engine loads, temperatures, idle times, etc. to estimate oil condition.

I run synthetic which doesn't break down over a normal oil change interval, it just gets dirty. I change mine when it appears dirty to me, which is around 6,000 miles. Sometimes it's still not so dark at 6,000 miles, but I still stick to that schedule because I rotate my tires then and changing the oil while I have the car up on jack stands is convenient. I don't even refer to the oil life indicator, but I recall seeing it during my last oil change/rotation because I was going through the menu to relearn the TPMS. If I recall correctly, it indicated that the oil life was somewhere in the 50-percentile range.

Well I have free service plan from my dealer for every 10000kms/5000 miles approx till 150000 KMS
I think I should be good if I just stick to mileage based oil change instead of using the oil life meter.

I agree.

The company I work for switched to a different brand of vans for our fleet and one of the requirements is that the oil has to be changed and tires rotated every 5,000 miles and only at a Ford dealership. The oil life meter is never referred to. My previous van, a 2013 Chevrolet Express with a 6.0, would go something like 15,000 miles before the oil life meter was at 25%. I opted to stick to 6,000-mile oil change intervals. I ran the piss outta that van for 230,000 miles in the 3 years I had it and it still ran like a champ and burned no oil when the trans died at 230K miles.

I change mine at 50% and again at 0%!then reset it. Or 5000 miles, whichever first

Yep. Same here. It costs like $40 or something silly cheap to get it changed. No brainer every 5k for me.

Going to do 5K mile oil changes also like I have been doing in all my vehicles..Right now I am on my factory fill in my 2016 Tahoe..I have 3200 miles and have 54% life left in the oil..Might have to change out the factory fill before 5K miles but not sure yet.

In my 03, I do it every 2500-3000 miles. I don't even pay attention to the oil life meter. I just hit 276,000 with no major issues.

Mostly goes by miles. Take the 3200 miles on yours and see what 3200 is 54% of. I'm no math whiz but I'd say it's around 7000 miles which is close to what my owners manual says. I try to follow the manual. They set the frequency for a reason. Also keep receipts in case you have an issue and you need to prove you did your part.

Glad to help. Take care of that truck and you'll be amazed how reliable they are. I use the cheapest OnStar subscription, I think less than $10 month and get the reminders for all services needed from rear diff to air filters and if I'm locked out they open remotely. I had to use it dang dogs locked me out with it running. Good luck
