I noticed they had a 28-gallon fuel tank for the 2021 model year and now have a 24-gallon fuel tank for the 2022 year. What has changed, and is it possible to replace the 24-gallon with the 28-gallon? (asking for a friend).

GM figures it costs fuel to carry fuel so they have been making the tanks smaller. The engines are also more fuel efficient than before, so they size them to run about 300 city miles and 400-500 highway miles. Generally speaking of course.

As said above, the 24 is for Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, and 28 is for Suburban, Yukon XL, and Escalade ESV.

The fuel tanks on the T1XX SUV's did change volumes based on design and weight issues. Range is what dictates the fuel tank size, the Tahoes/Yukons went from 26 gallons to 24 gallons, and the Suburban's/Yukon XL's went from 31.5 to 28 gallons. these tanks are also used on the Cadillac's. And to answer the question the 28 gallon fuel tank will not interchange with the 24 gallon tank. The 28 gallon tank is longer because of the WB change.
