I'll try to figure out what's wrong with my 1996 Chevy Tahoe. I was driving to work one morning and my check engine light came on and it started shaking. So what I did first off was changing spark plugs and wires. Then change the distributor cap and the rotor. Then I change the EGR valve. I found a leak in the exhaust and change out the exhaust donut Gasket. Then I changed out the fuel pressure regulator. I started my truck up thinking everything was going to be ok then all the sudden it started smoking and then I try to figure out where the smoke was coming from and I looked under the car in my exhaust was glowing red. I'm really trying to figure out the next step to take to get this fixed. I have done everything that I know how to do. I hear a air leak noise and it starts smoking and the exhaust is going red and it is still misfiring trying to figure out what's wrong please help. Thank you

Did you run the code or codes? That's the best first step to take, then go from there. How'd the plugs look? Fouled? How was the old cap and rotor? Corroded?

I ran the codes first it was cylinder 1 then 7 then 3 then 6 and it kept on switching. Then went to a random misfire. Yes the spark plugs where fouled. No the old cap and rotor was in pretty good shape.

I'm def not an expert, but if your exhaust was glowing red, I'd think because it was running way rich with the misfire. The fouled plugs are proof of that. When did you change your plug wires last? Nvm, I just saw that you did that too. What's your codes now? I was having very similar problems with my express van which has a vortec motor in it. Turned out to be the distributor itself. Have any play in the shaft in yours?

Just for the he'll of it: how's the gas in it? Old? Maybe it has a lot of water in it? Maybe try some dry gas in it if it has water. How old is the fuel pump? Again, I'm def no expert, just trying to throw out some plausible scenarios.

No I just put gas in it before it went bad. The fuel pump is about a year old. I put premium gas in it the last time my buddy told me it would clear out my fuel system.

I also just went outside and tried to start it it tries to kick over but it just keeps cranking. If that helps.

Read the fuel pressure as you're cranking it. I had that same issue and it was my fuel pump. Also try banging the gas tank as someone cranks it. If it tries to start, or starts, it's the fuel pump.

Yup all the symptoms , thats how i got my yukon so cheap, the guys mechanic did a full tune up with new o2's and fuel pump. So the guy just wanted what he had into parts back. Took me 10 mins to diagnose..Fuel pressure droped 30psi in one second. I popped the TB off and #2 & #4 had cracked lines flooding the system.. causing the front o2's to command a super lean with fue l delivery and hella retard timing condition.

Its not a bad job at all, took me about an hour each each way. Now it runs like a top!

I wonder.. does it allready have the updated version? Injectors insted of poppet valves? Did you smell raw gas when the upper intake was off?

Quick question could it be a clogged catylic converter.
