need a quick answer before i buy a tahoe today

i am going to pick up a nbs tahoe. i have two to choose from both 2004. one is a loaded lt and the other ls. the lt has the awd. the ls 4x4 with the option to leave it in 2wd. does the awd hurt gas milage compared to the leaving it in 2wd. is the awd option like the auto 4x4 in that it only switches to awe when it senses slippage. or is it awd all the time.

Also an interesting read although diff years the AWD seems to be better on paved roads and not as much off road like the 4x4 would be...
