Navigation/CD/Radio Systems

Hello All,

I am new to the Forum and happy to be a new 2013 GMC Yukon SLT owner. I am thrilled I no longer will be dealing with the British...former Land Rover owners will know exactly what I am talking about.

I have question - we bought the car with no Navigation system. We are looking for something as good as what the factory would have put in there (fully compatible with existing circuitry) if it was an option.

Suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

I installed (along with others on here) the 2012+ factory HDD nav and absolutely love it. Ask yourself what function you want, ie: good nav, easily updated, streaming capability.

The factory nav is great for integration but lacks in the nav dept. (it's fast, but not as great as a smartphone map). It's iphone capabilities are very nice, and the built in hard drive is great for storing music, and is very fast for searching music. That unit can be had for around $1200-$1500. Or you can go aftermarket for half that. Too many choices to list! I give the 2012+ nav props though. I love it.

I had factory nav in my 08 and recently installed a pioneer 8500bhs which is a massive upgrade IMO. I integrated every oem function including: bluetooth, onstar, rear view camera and sensors, satellite radio usimg oem roof antenna, all chimes, 2nd row dvd screen, etc. The 2012+ factory navs are a huge improvement but for half the cost you can get a lot more function. I use my iphone for nav displaying it on the screen of the radio and it works great. I have multiple nav app options or simply mirror google maps to the screen.

I put in the AVIC-Z150BH by Pioneer and love it. It's their flagship screen and I have no complaints.

I had factory nav in my 08 and recently installed a pioneer 8500bhs which is a massive upgrade IMO. I integrated every oem function including: bluetooth, onstar, rear view camera and sensors, satellite radio usimg oem roof antenna, all chimes, 2nd row dvd screen, etc. The 2012+ factory navs are a huge improvement but for half the cost you can get a lot more function. I use my iphone for nav displaying it on the screen of the radio and it works great. I have multiple nav app options or simply mirror google maps to the screen.

What do you do for nav? The 8500 looks great for the price, but nav is a big one for me.

Connect my iphone to the unit and use one of the nav apps that works with App Radio or simply mirror my iphone to the pioneer screen and use google or apple maps. I usually use Navfree which works with App Radio and allows for full touchscreen functions. When you mirror the phone you can't use the touch screen on the pioneer. Ill admit it tools a bit to get used to everything but now I really love it. Plus Nav using the iphone is 100x better then factory nav. You can always buy the pioneer nav module and hook that up but you loose app radio if you do. Or buy one of the other pioneer units with nav built in.

I really do love the 8500 though and I too used nav a lot before.

I appreciate the response, after I made my post I started reading/trying to wrap my head around the appradio functions and limitations. but that just answered my questions! I assume it just needs your phones data connection for it to run the nav app? And I would still be able to listen to Sirius as long as I am not mirroring my iPhone?

Yup exactly. Took a few tries to get it all setup correct but you got it. Also you don't need the overpriced hdmi kit they sell. Just any standard hdmi cord along with an apple digital av adapter (hdmi on one end).

I use an iphone 5 and I bought a lightning cable extender since the apple digital AV adapter is about 6 inches long. I installed an hdmi port in my center console so everything is hidden. I can provide pics later.

And I need the pioneer xm module to retain factory function, and it will use the factory antenna?

Yessir you are correct. I didn't want to use the magnetic antenna for the SiriusXM so I unhooked the oem cable from behind the glovebox and took the plastic cap off the end then comnected directly to the SXV200v1. I'll get pics tonight hopefully. You can actually retain the oem satellite tuner but it will only display on the DIC and not the pioneer unit at all. I wanted full control on the pioneer plus I can pause now too.

Question, I have a GMX-560 Lockpick connected to my stock HU in my 08 Tahoe. Do I even need it with the X8500BHS and if so, is it plug and play? Or does the parking break override module replace the lockpick?

Lockpick is just to unlock the OEM nav. Isn't compatible with aftermarket units. The parking break bypass gives you vehicle in motion function on the pioneer unit.

A VCIM is factory onstar/bluetooth module. My tahoe didn't come with factory bluetooth and was broken so I bought a compatible VCIM which added bluetooth. You don't need it with the Pioneer unit since it has bluetooth for phone and music built in. However I wanted to use the oem onstar mic that was already in my car since the sound quality is usually better for phone calls. If you don't have factory bluetooth then you would just use the plug in mic that comes with the pioneer. This is fine for most people.

You want the Metra Axxes GMOS-LAN-012 Wiring Harness

I bought the axxess ADGM-100 which has three different harnesses since I wasn't sure which one.
