Mechanical areas of concern?

My parents have a 2005 Yukon XL they are giving me. 160k miles Florida truck. The transmission has had its filter changed and flushed, differential serviced, new shocks, and inner and outer tie rods replaced. It does have a check engine light that I'll get my mechanic to fix before registering it in NY. Anything else I should ask my mechanic to look at?

This truck is in a desperate need of a paint job but no rust and the underbody is perfect. I figured once I have it I'll rust proof it and get a new paint job.

Working from home I put about 6000 miles a year on my current vehicle. Now I just have to get out of last year in my lease to not have car payment.

160k is the point of concern for a variety of wear items and is why people decide to dump them and assume a new car loan instead.
hubs, seals, water pump, radiator, knock sensors, maf, alternator, fuel pump, suspension, it's kind of a A~z list to be honest, it's not too bad if things have been maintained or taken in stride as they popped up over time., it's when they snowball several at a time that it's make it seem like a money pit.

Get it up in the air and have a look. If you’re handy you can do things over time. Does the front end feel right? Any obvious leaks? Calipers and lines look good? Given you’re in Florida you probably will escape rust related issues. A maintenance once over is probably warranted (fluids plugs etc)

Get it up in the air and have a look. If you’re handy you can do things over time. Does the front end feel right? Any obvious leaks? Calipers and lines look good? Given you’re in Florida you probably will escape rust related issues. A maintenance once over is probably warranted (fluids plugs etc)
Thankfully my dad has kept amazing care of it and kept up in the required maintenance. I am not afraid to bust my knuckles doing many repairs. I pick it up in FL in a couple weeks. The problem is the snow and ice here in NY. I'll wait until spring to fix the things that can wait. Things that can't wait, I'll take it to my friend's garage. He doesn't give me deals, but I know he won't screw me. I'm never going to ask for a deal. Knowing he won't screw me is worth more than any price break.

It doesn't burn any oil. Knowing my father has kept up on the trans and differential fluid and filter changes, I would bet the coolant system has been kept up too.

I would almost bet the plugs need to be replaced.

As for brake lines, last time I saw him you could still see the factory original tags on the brake lines. What a difference a central Florida car looks like compared to the rust belt of NY. Of course any rubber could rot.

It has had a recent alignment. I'm sure if something felt loose, he would have taken care of it.

They were using the car to travel back and forth to NY and FL. He didn't want get stranded, so would always have everything tuned and looked at before heading north.

I just can't keep justifying paying so much a month for my 23 Silverado and it just sits in my driveway. Hopefully I can get a few years out of this Yukon.

My father said the radio quit and he had someone look at it. They said $1800 to fix it since it is a bose. My dad said "I'll just keep using my Bluetooth speaker instead". I grew up in the high of car audio. So of course in the late 90's my stereo was worth more than my '88 Ranger. It would cost a fraction of that to add a new system.

From what I've read, I think you'll have a trouble free vehicle. Those were great trucks. When you get it home, it may be worth paying your friend for 2 hours of shop time for him to give it a once over. Get it rust proofed ASAP and you'll be free of rust gremlins for many years.

That is exactly my plan. My father is only getting rid of it because he had to replace the blend door motor and doesn't want to risk no AC if it dies again.

Nice thing is in NY, you can get by with 1, 2, 3, or 4 air conditioning modes. Just depends on how fast you are driving and how many windows you need to roll down. LOL

Ditto. My first truck had those triangle vent windows you could aim at yourself. I do miss those on the newer stuff.
I loved those vent windows, as well. And, yes, my '63 Ford Falcon had those floor vents, and they were fantastic.

The biggest thing with the NBS rigs is the transmission. They usually start giving issues at 150k. That's the usual. Is that why he had it serviced? I've heard of guys going over 200k--close to 300k on an original transmission, so it may vary for you. As for the radio just put in a double din touchscreen radio. Hopefully the Bose amp is ok, but if not you could always completely bypass the Bose system. No biggie with that.

Sounds like a solid truck and a good move getting it. For a couple of payments on that '23 Silverado you can get a nice, modern stereo system setup and probably finish up most of the maintenance concerns. Check out Crutchfield's options. Post some pics of that rig!

I've been using crutchfield when they would send catalogs to your house. And now I'm feeling old.
