Lift gate glass hinge is broken.

I have an 05 Yukon and at about the 100,000 mike mark my lift gate glass started to look a little sideways. The dealership wants about $1000 to replace the entire thing saying you can't fix the hinge. Anyone know a good deal or some type of fix? Also I searched all over the forum and didn't find a post about this so link me if it has already been discussed.

i havent even looked to see what the hinge looks like....post pics so we can see whre its broken? maybe its someting that can be JB welded back together? i JB'd an unfixable transducer that i busted on my boat with JB and its held up perfectly fine for almost 3 years now...and it takes alot of abuse back there in the water at top speed...if its broken off the glass or if the hinge is broken someplace u can repair it, i would imagine JB would fix it for dirt cheap..much cheaper than the dealer...

It looks like it was glued to the glass. I have class so no time to post pics at the moment but I'll get some on here as soon as I get done with that before work.

I had a buddy who used to own an Envoy with teh same issue. He never got it fix due to the expense of having to replace the whole shebang like you're talking about ...

You have two options. Glue it with.some strong urethane adhesive for windshields, or go get a rear glass from a junkyard. My brother had that problem on his 97 Blazer. He ended up getting another window from a junkyard for 50 bucks.

Yeah I had a feeling that might be the case. This gap is hideous and driving me nuts. Can't see much but that's the hinge. The way it's made is kinda asking for trouble. Just glued and it has all the pressure from the gas lifts.

Yeah we had some crazy storms this week and I think I saw evidence of a water trail on the inside this morning... :sobs:

Well temporary fix from the water leakage. I took off the strut on that side and that closed the gap right up. Now to find the window. I saw on another forum that gm changed the glass in 06 because it was a known problem. A couple guys even got it fixed for free. But I'm over the 100,000 so not likely for me to get the freebie.

hell for that price put a esky 3rd brake light on there. Its a new window and all. You will just have to get it painted. I still think you could find the esky light/window and have it painted for under 1000.

I have been hunting for that esky back glass all day. Junk yards, eBay, craigslist, and forums. I found a couple at some sites. Does the 3rd brake come on the glass or is that something I need to find as well? Sorry, I've never dealt with the eskys just hoes and kons.

I had the same issue with the right hinge as well. It's just glued to the glass with this black junk. Sooner or later on hinge will brake out. It started with mine the same way like yours looks now and then the hindge came more and more out.
I took out the tailglas and cleaned up the area around the hinge and reattached it with JB weld. No problems with it since than anymore. This is how it looks right now.

Just get a used glass at a wrecking yard and swap it out. It takes 10 minutes. The glass is cheap.

Like he said, get one from the junk yard. There are plenty of them. I paid around $50. Mine did the same thing. Easy to replace.

Same here. Found a guy on C/L parting one out and the back glass was good. I think I paid $50 as well.

I did the same as you but I cannot get the holes to align to slide the glass back in. Any tips?

Buy a used glass from a wrecking yard. You can get one around me for $40. I can’t imagine they’re much more anywhere else.
