Larger gas tank

We have towed with our Denali for some time and have to stop frequently to fill the gas tank. Does anyone know of a way or company that can install a larger tank?

The issue is the approval process for gasoline tanks. It's not that big of a challenge on diesel tanks.

Do you have a Yukon or Yukon XL? This is one of the reasons we would opt for a XL. Also, GM made the standard length longer to the point where you might a well just get an XL.

No, we have the regular Yukon, although at least 6-12 inches longer than our 2015. The XL would not fit in our garage.

The other green fuel motor choice would be your friend here. I go 2 weeks on a tank of fuel and I'm out and about every day....

But he tows, and the baby Duramax sucks down DEF while towing. There's quite a few threads about DEF usage in the Duramax sub-forum.

Even if he used a 2.5-gallon container every thousand miles which I don't believe is realistic, the increase in mileage of the Duramax (+30% min..) combined with the fact that he's probably feeding a 6.2 with premium still makes the Duramax a far and away winner. I haven't put 60.00 of DEF in mine in 3.5 Years.....Not to mention the fact that he doesn't tow ALL the time with it.....


Right now, in our area Diesel is 3.35 and Premium is 4.49. I mean a 2.5 container at Walmart is about nine bucks and it's even cheaper if you fill up at dispensers, which is what I would do if I was seriously towing....

I think people often underestimate how much DEF they actually use when the vehicle is actually loaded.

Also, I'm just not that concerned about fuel cost when you're 1. buying a 1/2 ton based SUV and 2. already spending > $70k on an SUV.

I'd gladly pay that additional fuel cost for the simplicity of a naturally aspirated V8 compared to the out of warranty repair costs on a diesel powertrain.

Ford does it right with a 36 gallon fuel tank on the F150. Not sure what GM was thinking with the 24 gallon fuel tank on their 1500s.

The only scenario in which I would opt for a turbodiesel is usually in the case of towing heavy beyond what a 1/2 ton is realistically capable of. It's the exhaust braking feature of the turbodiesels in HDs. I haven't been convinced that the exhaust braking feature is substantial in the baby Duramax powertrains.

I have an XL and the "baby gas tank" is driving me nuts!! I mean I'm at an avg of 380 miles that I'm getting out of a full tank of 27/28 gallons. I mean the truck has more open space under it than a school bus.

I made the mistake once by buying the standard wheel base Expedition back in 2019. Towed a 4500lb single axle camper to Yellowstone and it couldn’t even go 200 miles before we had to stop and fill up thanks to the puny 24 gallon tank it had. Granted, 28 gallons in the Expedition Max or Yukon XL isn't that much more, but it’ll get ya another 40-50 miles down the road.

Since the feds consider the gas tank part of the emissions on a vehicle, nobody touches them anymore. There is a company in Idaho that makes larger tanks for diesel trucks, if the openings are the same...

Stopping every couple hours while towing is good practice to make sure everything is aok on the trailer.

I considered this too. Now, Wavian Jerry Cans are my friends.

I love the 3.0 diesel. My mileage without towing is amazing. Filling it up puts the computed range over 600 miles. Around town I avg 24. I've towed a bit with it and the highway avg drops down to about 17, but when I towed with my 6.2 prior, that same trip would be around 12 mpg. I do wish GM had a 35 gal tank option.

Back when I had my '22 Silverado with the LM2, I was getting 12-13mpg whilst towing my 6500lb camper. That dropped to about 9mpg with the 6.2 in our Yukon. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison since they're not the same vehicle, but ya, that little diesel kicked ass. And yes, it ABSOLUTELY loved to drink the DEF. 500 miles to empty at it's worst when towing up and down grades.

This is why I will never consider the GM 1500 in the 1/2 ton category. This seems like it would be such a simple fix.

It wasn't a full tank, but it was empty in short order after the fact. I believe it drops to about 1000 miles on a full tank if you tow a lot.

This is why I wanted the Duramax. On the freeway I can get 700+ miles on a full tank. All in town back and forth to work 625+ on a tank. I haven't pulled a trailer yet though.

And it's reasons like this why I carry a medical urinal in my side door pocket. I've had it there since I bought the vehicle back in 21 (2022YM), and used it several times when I'm nowhere near a public restroom. It definitely comes in handy.

So how many miles do you have on that 2022 to need to carry around a pee-jar?

The most miles I've gotten with my current wheel and tire setup, and a full tank of gas was a range of up to 386 miles. As it stands, I have about 57k miles on my AT4.
