K&N Oil Separator (Catch Can)

Thought about adding a Catch Can to my 5.3 powered 2020 Tahoe over the years, but never did it. A couple months ago, I noticed K&N came out with their own version that used the OEM hoses and mounting location. Decided to give it a try.

Really glad I did. I installed it about 2k miles ago.

As part of an oil change today, I checked to see how full it was. It was about 1/3 full of a nasty brown oil and water mix.

Mad at myself for not adding the Can sooner.

Nice installation job. Yes, these catch cans are really helpful in not allowing oil get into the motor's intake. I log the miles and amount of oil captured every time that I empty my catch can, so that I can keep tabs on it, and I average just about 1 fl oz of oil for every 1000 miles driven.

Did this install about 2 weeks ago. I should've done this long time ago as well.

I put mine on my truck when it had less than 50 miles on it! IMO a must for DI engines.

I added the exact same catch can. I also collect about an ounce per 1000 miles. After doing the cam and lifters for a second time, I realized this can should have been added years ago. The intake valves were caked with carbon or oil deposits as well as the piston tops. not to mention maybe ounces of oil in the intake manifold. Now i'm running 10w-40 in the summer and plan for 0w-30 or 0w-40 in the winter. AFM was just disabled with HP Tuners, so hopefully these parts will live longer.

All you have to do to be convinced, is to look at what the catch can actually catches. I also catch about 1 oz. of fluid per 1000 miles driven.

Has anyone added catch cans between the valve covers and intake? I see oily residue there as well, so that's the next progression for me.

I check my K&N oil can every oil change and it works fine for me. In Northern Florida for geography. Not sure if it does anything but it sure collects stuff! Very easy to install.

Obviously it’s doing something. The oil collected you see in the can didn’t go into your intake and foul the valves!

The LT motors need it more than the LS motors, due to their direct injection methodology. The LS motors, with port injection, have a gas/air mixture constantly running over the backs of the intake valves, thereby doing some washing and minimizing buildup on the valve surfaces.

BUT, I've had a catch can on my 07 L92 LS motor for over 15,000 miles, and the sludge that it collects convinces me that it is a good device to have. I want only gas/oil in my cylinders, and not sludge.

I average about 1 fl. oz. of sludge per 1000 miles driven in my catch can.

Correct. You can have a nice chat with ChatGPT or grok and it will tell you which vehicles it recommends for catch cans and which not so helpful based on the DI and also factory PCV setup.

Told me that out of all the cars I own a 2026 Tahoe 6.2L a catch cans is very beneficial.

Also both AIs are range DFM fans.
