I installed factory nav and now I am going to install the factory backup camera, but Im not going to use the OEM harnesses and module. I am going to buy a 12v to 6v converter, hook up the reverse signal power wires to the input of the converter and the output wires to the power wires on the camera. The signal wires will be hooked in to the head unit. My question is what kind of amp draw does the camera pull? I don't know if it matters or not, but I see converters that are 1-7.5amps, I don't know which one to get?

Let me know how this goes, make sure you get a module or something to flip the image or else it could mean turning the wrong way and ending up with the rear of the truck not where you wanted it!

I know that if you didnt have the module in there before under the right front passenger seat then the harness going to the back of the truck will not be there as well. Kinda a PTA especially if you already had full nav and rear entertainment package from the factory.

I added factory nav it wasn't a big deal and the backup camera wont be a big deal either once I figure out how many amps the 12V to 6V inverter needs to be rated for. From my understanding the oem camera or nav, whichever one I'm not sure flips the screen for you. I'm thinking it will be a few hours for the install and a flash at the dealership and then I'm done :D
Just wish someone I knew if I needed to worry about amps on the inverter or if I can just buy any 12v-6v inverter....

The factory camera comes with a module built into the wiring harness. That is the box that's located under the passenger front seat. The camera itself does NOT flip the image.

I have been reading how to do this on another forum where numerous people have done the mod the way I am about to do it. They all say that module is to step down the power from 12v to 5v. I am going to get the inverter tomorrow and hopefully have everything installed so the dealer can program it next week sometime. If it doesnt flip the image I will try and figure out a way to flip it. If I can't figure it out, oh well it's only costing me 40 bucks for the parts. I'll buy a kenwood camera to install if all else fails.

Will do...it seems like it will be easy. Hardest part will be hacking up the rear appliqué to fit the OEM camera.
