Its not uncommon in the high performace world to add a 2nd or even a 3rd pump to gm stock fuel buckets and then y together the outlets into a common feed line. This would be your best and easiest option. then some creative wiring to get them to operate how you want.

or you could even do an aftermarket hat and lose the stock bucket.

Fless, ya know I've never done one, but I am pretty certain I'll hate it. :D

I did mine twice; first for the fuel pump and second for a bad fuel pump gasket a couple of years later. Easy peasy, both times on jackstands. ;)

Mine wasn't bad since it's lived in low-salt States.

Now don't go making it look easy, it'll mess with self-esteem when I attempt it!
My 97 has the 42 gallon. Hope it fails empty-ish!!
Bummer on the gasket. I'm seriously considering shopping in a saltless area for my next rig...that's the problem with my 97.

Seriously, removing the tank isn't all that difficult.
And a welcome opportunity to check the rust protection and, if necessary, replace it, especially the brake lines.

And it's a good idea to disconnect and reconnect the quick-release fasteners on the fuel lines and the electrical connectors to ensure they remain functional.

You have to see the advantages of a dead fuel pump. :Big Laugh:

So far, no one has mentioned that your incorrect fuel gauge could also be related to a defective stepper motor and may not even be related to your fuel pump replacement.

GM vehicles almost always have their fuel pump die less than 30mins after filling the tank. You can set your watch to it! The Farmer's Almanac even has it written in there. One of the Greek Gods even predicted it before GM even existed!!!! Wanna know which 2 terminals on your OBD2 connector to jump to turn the fuel pump on continuously for draining of the tank?

If a Greek god were involved, the fuel pump would have broken upon initial delivery of the car, and you'd have to fill out 200 forms to get a new one working again. Believe me, I know Greece.

I was scrolling thru thinking about this same thing.. add a 2nd pump next to the 1st one, Y into the fuel hose. need to make sure the pumps you use have a built in check valve. most oem pumps do, few aftermath don't as they restrict flow more than a high flow inline check valve does.

wiring is the hardest part, if you have a fuel pump module that runs the pump off a duty cycle. if it's just a return style system no biggy. Just switched power, if it's duty cycle you'll need a 3 way switch inline to select one or the other.

good that he used acdelco, you might check the warranty on the part, might be covered but sadly no parts are any good anymore and honestly a back up isn't a horrible idea if you're far from home often. good note is the fuel level sender doesn't really have anything to do with pump. was probably just coincidence the first time and junk parts this time.

I don't even know if it works anymore, but old mechanica trick for a pump that won't turn on, is have someone crank the engine over and another hit the tank with a bit rubber mallet. usually what happens to a pump is they run fine until turned off and then hit a dead spot and won't spin next key on. it you shock them, they start working again for a till next key off. enough to pull it into the shop to rack it. same thing we used to do with starters when they went bad. you smack them with a a hammer, shock the brushes and it would crank. was common to see people doing this in parking lots when I was a kid.

I have a 1999 and a 2001. I cut holes in both of them and it takes me about 30 minutes to install a new pump. I do carry a spare pump with me. If caught on the road I would probably get a mechanic to install the pump. I plan to keep them for at least 10 more years. The location to cut the hole should be well researched before you proceed. The information is readily available.

Ive done few and wired them to a hobbs switch to come on with boost. For what the OP wants, id run the two pumps thru a 5 pin relay where main pump is on the 87A terminal so its default when the relay is off, then have the secondary pump on the 87 terminal and turning on said relay transitions to the second pump.

yeah, I see now that some of the stand alones have an output for a 2nd and even 3rd pump. helps when most high end pumps are brushless these days. and have a whole map for them.

the 5pin relay would be the way to do it. I was thinking switch, but yeah. lot of load for a switch.
