I recently had my windows tinted and the guy at the garage suggested I should get DOD done to my tahoe.
It has 63000. Miles on it
Any thoughts or suggestions

Without mechanically dod deleting the engine it is basically a ticking time bomb I tuned mine out and was able to prolong the life of my engine but it was a bandaid it’s about 1500$ in parts to dod delete a 5.3 but it’s a good opportunity for a cam swap while it’s apart and when you get done the engine should last for 200-300,000 miles or more

It’s very hit or miss my 07 reached over 400,000 miles with the dod still inside with nothing but a tune disabling it
My dads hit 90,000 and trashed the top end
I see all the time on here of the newer ones blowing up with 20-40,000 miles on them
The problem if you don’t mechanically delete it by doing a new cam lifters etc then when the lifter finally does go you have the chance to mess your head up valve springs cam shaft valves it could turn into a nightmare quickly

Basically the springs in those dod lifters like to collapse or break which then shuts oil off to that cylinder and when it would go into v8 mode again then you have a oil starved cylinder if you plan on keeping the vehicle you can do the delete yourself for around 1500$ in parts if your paying someone to do it for you expect it to be more around 2500-3,000$ unless you know someone who will do it cheap but also knows what they are doing

The title of the thread says you have a 2021, the DOD (displacement on Demand) system used in the 21+ is called DFM (dynamic fuel management) and differs greatly from the previous generation's AFM (active fuel management).

Basically it's gonna be real expensive to delete the DFM because you'll need a new camshaft, 16 new lifters & push rods and custom computer tuning (each vehicle has is own unique code that has to be broken to actually tune anything, so mail order tuners can't turn off the DFM in 21+ models). And of course, touching any of this will void any warranty you may have.

This^. I don’t understand the stigma around DFM and why people think spending $3k to lose gas mileage and avoid a problem that likely will never happen makes sense.

Mostly because people don't want the POS they just spend $90K on breaking down and leaving them stranded on the side of the road. And if you're paying attention at all (which you obviously aren't) then you'd know that DFM/ AFM failures are far from an isolated case.

Why are you being snarky? If you have the cash to spare then do it, why are you asking the internet for advice? Sounds like you can’t afford it or it’d be done by now if it’s so obviously worth it.

the AFM and especially the DFM thing is just a bandaid by GM to get around CARB, they decided to take that route when they lost the ability to get credits for E85, so they dumped E85 and created DFM & stop/start. It works but can be prone to issues, keep the oil changed more often and don't beat on it and it might be ok.

I didn't ask the internet for advice, I was answering the question of the original poster (maybe read the thread next time). Affording it isn't the issue for me personally (although it is certainly a big consideration), its warranty voiding. When we purchased this expensive Tahoe (high country 4x4 with deluxe package and air ride), we also purchased the 100K mile GM extended warranty.

If we still have the Tahoe after the warranty is up (and still want to keep it) I'll probably pull the engine, rebuilt it and delete the DFM then. Until then GM can fix it (heck there is already a TSB out there for them to replace the engine now, see attached PDF)
