HID Fog Problem

So I just did the 6 hi mod yesterday by adding a diode from the lows to the fogs relay. Already had the lows grounded out.

When I turn my lights on today all the lights flicker and two go out. Tried it several times and different ones go out. Real bad flicker. So I pulled the diode and everything is good to go. Did I do something wrong? I used an "Epoxy Rectifier Diode, 3 Amps 200PIV". Did I use the wrong one?

Is there a better way to do this? Does grounding out the fogs work like grounding the lows do? Thanks guys.

I think I am just going to re wire it on its own separate system. That way I can turn them on whenever I want. For the fog wiring, I assume it goes all the way back up to the fuse box and is the same color wiring as at the actual light housing?

do you have a volt meter? see what kind of power you got at the harness. you might need to wire in relays for the hids. im not too sure about the diode thing

Yeah I didnt think about that. I do have a meter. I will have to check it out. Is the relay you are talking about just the regular automotive relay? Or are you talking about an HID harness?

If everything worked properly before the 6 hi sounds like the diode is messing things up. I'm not sure what kind of diode to use but make sure you have the correct one. Also, like gdddup said, if you don't have a relay harness already, it's a good idea to get one for each pair of hids. The relays will supply the ballasts with the correct voltage needed directly from the battery.

Fuses are all good. Checked after the lights freaked out.

No need to do any of that grounding, at least I didnt have to do that. Took me all of 5 minutes (with most of the time trying to get the damn relays out of the socket!) i think you want the 3amp, 50 volt diode (radio shack ones for $1.75). Make sure the grey part of the diode is pointing towards the high relay. I just did the 4 hi mod, and for the hell of it, did the 6 hi mod to see if i liked it. had it for a day and decided i didnt want the 6 hi because i have HIDs in the fogs and didnt want to turn them off and on all the time with the highs. Although i may connect fogs to lows.

if you wanted to connect fogs to low relay (HDLP - Low), connect diode from #85 fog relay to #85 low relay (follow arrow). You'll have two diodes for the low relay, but take your time and you'll be able to fit it in there. If you wanted to do 6 hi, instead of connect diode from fog to low, connect diode from #85 fog to #85 hi relay (HDLP - High)

Sorry, this is the first time I noticed the thread!! Did the HID fogs work before the diode? If so, I'd say it's the diode, if not, then I'd say you might need a harness!

Yeah since I pulled the diode everything is working great. No flickering in the lows or the fogs at all. Nice smooth warm up every time. I might run to radio shack real quick and make sure I didnt pick up the wrong diode. Thats the only thing I can think of unless there is some strange wiring bug in my electrical system.

you have 3 t-taps, and 1 eyelet, all wired into 2 relays. you tap into the highs, low, fogs and use the eyelet on your ground. when the high beams are switched on, they send signals to the relays to turn on the lows and fogs. very simple install.
