I know some of you may have experienced this before. I have a new pump and fuel lines for my Flex Fuel Yukon. However, when I removed the gas tank, there was mud, water, and grass around the fuel pump. Cleaned it up. Now the fun part. It's so rusted that the outside tabs are gone, and the first couple of hits with a hammer resulted in a couple of chunks flying. I'm not sure what to do, a new gas tank is around $600.

Have you looked into local junkyards or auto dismantlers? Who knows...you might get lucky.

EDIT: what part of the country are you in?

Junkyard, UPull. Our UPull price is under $30. Be sure that the tank is like yours (for Flex Fuel), with the evap lines or clips on the passenger side and the clips for the two fuel lines on the driver's side.

Does yours look oriented like this?

Yep. that would be it. Funny, the pics I got of the replacement retainer ring have the square tabs that go all the way around the perimeter. I live in Wisconsin (Appleton area). Gotta love the rust belt.

The fuel pump gasket and lock ring are unique to the Flex tanks and pumps.

Gasket: GM Genuine G39 (this is not an o-ring like other pumps use)
Lock Ring: GM Genuine TR14

If you haven’t gotten that apart by now I have a feeing that even if you get that ring off you will find that the tabs on the tank side are rusted too. You will likely need to remove that ring in pieces. You probably need a different tank.

We didn't use a hammer when we removed mine, just a couple of channel lock pliers between the ears and a notch on the ring, alternating from two opposed ears to the other set. Granted, mine wasn't rusted like that but if I were you I'd very carefully clean off as much rust as possible from around the ears and use penetrating oil on the four contact points. Maybe with some light tapping near the ears to shake it up a little.

You should be able to swing the fuel pressure sensor away from the ear that it is near, just spin it a little, or just pull it out.

What do you have to lose by trying? Interested in seeing what you do with it.

I haven't been able to work on it because of my work schedule. I'll take another crack at it this afternoon. Just got home from work, so I need a nap.

Welp, a different tank it is. I went out on a limb after soaking the lock ring for days in PB blaster and then bashing it with a chisel and hammer. More chunks flying.
