I have a 99 tahoe I picked up for short money, It has rear end issues. looking for some input from you guys. I took the rear end cover off and from what I see it looks like someone has been in ther already. It looks like someone removed one of the locking mechanisims. one of the spider gears is missing some teeth. other then that theres a small amount of metal shavings.

I've never rebuilt a rear end before. I can take it apart but have no access to the tools to rebuild one. and I have very little time to get this done nor money on my side I was looking at maybe putting a tru trac in but dont know what it would take to do it

Dial indicator to set up the backlash and pinion depth....should be the only specialty tool required.....Advanced Auto parts have a tool rental program.

If money is a big factor call the boneyard ....I would replace wheel bearings and seals if installing a used rearend,but if there are no visable leaks you could run it a while first.

That is not human intervention that is a g80 gov bomb that did not blow up violently. Consider your self luck they can blow up the whole case. Get a different locker clean out the entire axle and replace the entire bearing and seal set.

dont want to buy the boneyard rear end around here cost more the the tru trac. then I'll still have the same ticing time bomb

I just bought a truetrac and 456 gears and a whole new rebuilt kit inside and out for the 10bolt. i think the price was around 900 bucks for everything?

If the gears are still good, that will save you some time and money.
Setting up the pinion and crush sleeve is the hardest part

I've seen that video before. I looked at a used NBS hoe the other day and the salesman tried to sell the g80 option as a plus....sounds like more of a huge expenditure waiting to happen.

Id buy some a place with a warranty. Summit or Randys Ring and pinion

Yea you could just do that as well. youll need a backlash unit like stated then and some shims.

well it's all done. I got an open diff from a local guy around my way schoolstreettruck.com. Installed it today heres the pics and some video. and before you start flaming I put oil on it and ran it for about 15 seconds.
