I swapped intake manifolds on my diesel this past week. My Tahoe came stock with the EGR-style manifold, and I swapped it out for a non-EGR manifold off a 3500.
Here's the original intake (EGR went in the hole in the middle):
Here's the new intake installed; you can see how it's much more free-flowing:
Here's the upper plenum that goes from the turbo to the intake manifold; non-EGR on the left, EGR style on the right:
I swapped in the better canister-style airbox and filter from the same 3500 truck; it's supposed to supply more air to the turbo:
I also installed my new Flowmaster 3" mandrel-bent downpipe that goes from the turbo to the exhaust; you can see how the stock pipe is 'crushed' for clearance from the factory. I don't know why; there was plenty of room for the 3" pipe, and it doesn't hit anything:
I also installed the new Flowmaster crossover pipe that connects the two exhaust manifolds together. I also was finally able to install the 3.5" exhaust system I purchased back in 2006! Man, I've had that sitting in the garage for a while. I was beginning to think I would never get around to putting it together. It sounds great. It has a Donaldson muffler that allows just enough of a rumble to let you know there's a V-8 under the hood, but not loud enough to be annoying on the highway. Hopefully these upgrades have unleashed a few ponies and maybe added a bit of extra MPG.
