Gas Smell

I am the original owner of a 1997 4WD, 2-door, Yukon (202k mi.). Since my last fill up (which I did not over fill as the pump shut off automatically at $100 with maybe a half gallon to go), I notice a strong gas smell in my enclosed garage. Do not notice anything leaking, or wet for that matter around the tank or filler.

Before I start getting under there and try to find the source, anything I should know about? I`m thinking the fill tube, fuel pump gasket, or anything else with the fuel running thru it. Could it be a simple as the gas cap venting bad?

heres how to check the gas cap
when you tighten it and its working correctly it takes some effort before it starts clicking
now if its bad when your screwing it in it will start clicking very easily

I had the same thing a year ago, smelled gas inside the car and all around the truck but didn't see any leaking. Turned out the top of my gas tank was rusting through, after replacing that and the filler neck my smell was cured. Also replaced the fuel pump while under there.

an emissions shop can properly test your cap but check if you can the fill tubes and hardware and the pump lock ring gasket.

I got my nose up in near the top of the tank as close as I could. Really could not say it is a gas smell there. Ruling out the gas cap as no smell is coming from there. The filler neck looks good from underneath.

Sure hope it`s not the tank. Sounds expensive.
