Well yesterday I hit 1k miles on my 2015i Yukon XL Denali. I usually do my first oil change at 1k miles. But wondering if that is bad. Is there break in oil when new? What do you guys think? Do it now or wait?

Modern vehicles doesn't use break in weight oil anymore. We have precise enough machining processes that we're not as worried about little chunks of things needing to break off in the first little bit.

That said, there's no reason to change your oil at 1000 miles. It certainly won't hurt anything but it's a waste. Honestly, given modern engine technology and oil you really don't need to change the oil nearly as often as before. 6000 miles is the new 3000 miles.

I change it every 5k miles.

But on my new vehicles my dad always told me to do the first one at 1k miles. He used to do engine and oil analysis. He said he would find metal shavings in the oil. But that was 30 years ago. I'm sure things have changed.

New at 1000 miles is good maintenance. Then Run whatever synthetic oil you are going to stick with. $40 well spent imo.

I'm on the 5K bandwagon as well considering we are running 020 Syn.
