Hi all, just got done with this little project, I've got an 01 Tahoe and 02 Yukon, I've done a fair bit of work to both, to include reworking the whole front end on the Tahoe, which leads me to this thread. I could not find any real verification that my Tahoe had an EVO sensor/actuator, so I figured I'd write up what I had to do in the hopes it'll help somebody else. My front end needed a complete rework, so I replaced everything in about 3 days last year, save for the steering rack and power steering (ps) pump. The 1a auto videos on YouTube were excellent for this. However, I started getting grinding from the pump at low revs, and replaced the pump to no avail. Then I did the rack, and while this solved other issues I was having it did not solve the grinding/not wanting to give me boosted steering. So, I took it apart this weekend to try and put in a pressure sensor (for newer vehicles only apparently) only to discover the threads were the wrong size. I started looking for another sensor to install only to discover that gm had discontinued this as well, but please correct me if I'm wrong. However, I called the local gm parts guy and the one in the next town over and they both tried to sell me a 85 dollar "conversion" kit. This just essentially deleted the sensor. Noted. So I took to the local junkyard and found a 99 Silverado that supposedly had the sensor and found it just had a line running like the old school Chevys from the rack to the ps pump. I was able to find a line at the parts store that had a fitting on both ends, and I found a pump that I suspect was from a late 90s truck but was identical other than the fitting, and bolted them both on. Lo and behold it was a direct fit, and had no issues when I fired it up. My biggest concern is that people who have this sensor go bad will likely need the older pump as the conversion kit was pretty specific to late 90s trucks, the fitting on the back of my pump was larger than these, and the new line would not thread.

Tl/dr: 01-02 Tahoe/Yukon have an EVO sensor/actuator. Swapped the pump for an older model and fitted older style lines. So far so good.

Can’t you just remove the pintle from inside the EVO/solenoid to “eliminate” the variable assist functionality completely?
